Yeah, it's really unclear that the Trade Expeditions tech is what allows land units to embark. I guess it only matters the first time you play, but still.

I tried to embark a 6-unit stack on a cog, I don't think I did it right because the army just disappeared in the open ocean and it was very upsetting.

Yes! Exactly the sort of confusion that needs to be avoided. The unit trait you were expecting was Naval Transport. It does seem odd that the Cog doesn't have that potential because it looks close to the Galleon however I think it's meant to be an approximation of a Caravel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caravel Right now navel transportation is kind of 2 dimensional and really only has 3 distinctions. Coast only. Mostly a coastal ship. Transoceanic ship.

Naval TransportRanged-combat naval unit, must have line of sight to attack. Replaces land units which embark to travel across ocean tiles.

I prefer the way they currently structure naval embarks, the tech could still use highlighting yeah since it also took me a second to notice it. Either way the game only needs 3 distinctions of ships for the purpose of transportation, the starting coast only ship does a good job of limiting you to a starting continent, letting you fish for sea curiosities. I kinda wish they kept Navigation ships at 4 turns before destruction instead of 5, since that seems like way too much time and would allow anyone by island hoping right or left to reach a new world when before it was more parilous. Transoceanic ships are a necessary evil since by that point it'd be problematic to manage so many ships who could easily die if you stop looking at it. it's better for the player experience to not have to worry about island hoping anymore with so many ships.
