Issues with the UI/UX and some suggestions

First of all, I'm really enjoying the game so far and I'm really optimistic for the future of this game. I've played through to the end of the Early Modern era once so far despite a few bugs and one game crash its been pretty smooth and intuitive to play.

However I think the UI has a number of problems that could be addressed. I'm a big Civilization fan and that game has some iffy UI design decisions that bring the experience down, if Humankind can release with a top notch User Experience then the game will easily have a good marketing point going for it.

So I decide to play a second game and note down any issue or annoyance I encountered with the UI specifically. Below is a list of things that have popped up, detailing what I feel is a problem and a suggestion or two on how this might be resolved/improved.

Notifications

Issue: The Map Focus icon (Spyglass) on this event button is too small, trying to click it can be a pain sometimes.
Recommendation: It either needs to be larger or maybe allow us to click the notification art to be taken there instead?

Issue: Ok but what population level is it at now?
Recommendation: A “2 -> 3” message in this notification would be helpful here. Perhaps even with its population cap: E.g. “Grew from 2/6 to 3/6.”

Issue: What does this mean? A new trade option is available? The AI started trading with me? The show me icon takes me to a new resource I just got so I assume it means I have a new tradable item? Not very clear.

Recommendation: This needs rewriting to be more obvious. "A new tradable resource has been unlocked." perhaps?

Issue: Which Star did I just unlock specifically? If I click the show me icon it opens the Culture menu but I don't know which one I just earned.
Recommendation: I think either the specific star I earned should be listed in this notification AND/OR when I open the Culture menu, the latest stars just earned should be glowing to indicate they are new.

City Management

A large portion of gameplay is spent using these menus to manage our empire. Therefore it needs to be a pain free as possible or risk players getting frustrated.

Issue: The city menu is far too small and everything feels cramped together while only showing a small amount of info.

Issue: The Construction list area gets even smaller if you queue things up to make room for the construction queue section making it even harder to see.

Issue: List mode is somewhat better but the icons get so small it requires hovering over each one to see what they are and ends up making things take longer.

Recommendation: With so much unused screen space why not have a pop-out option for the construction list? If you split the menus into Left Side and Right Side you can move the FIMS info plus population, status etc into the left side and the construction planning stuff on the right side? As for list mode in the construction menu perhaps showing the item name next to the icon in would help here. E.g. “[icon] Fishery {3 turns}”

Issue: 'Administered’ status is duplicated. The icon under the city name shows this city is administered, why do we need another administered tag?

Recommendation: Remove the 2nd Administered status tag to make more room. Perhaps also make the administrator icon red if unadministered to highlight it as a problem?

Issue: The tags, like Learning and Overproductive are good to show temporary bonuses but require hover to see what they do.

Recommendation: In the example above why not add the +5 Science icon and turns remaining icon onto the end of each status tag instead of only on hover? E.g. each tag could look like [Learning (+5 (Sci)) (3 Turns)]

Diplomacy

Issue: The AI here has a luxury I do not, however I do not know the effects to know if it is worth buying. If I hover over the Lead in their resources it does not tell me anything about it. However If I hover over the Dye in my resources the tooltip above does appear.

Recommendation: This tooltip is needed when I hover over the resources on their side too to help me make my decisions.

Issue: A lot of the diplomacy text uses “you” in the context of speech and for a long time I could never be sure if I had done something to them or not. When I read ‘you’ I automatically assume it's referring to me as the player. E.g. "You did this to us and I demand you compensate me”.
Recommendation: I think this should either use ‘They’, as in ‘They did this to us.’ or wrap the existing text in speech marks to emphasize that this is 1st person dialog. Another option would be to make it impersonal and rewrite like “The Olmecs (AI 2) have claimed a territory that is adjacent to one of our territories!”

Issue: In peace negotiations multiple cede territory options with the same name are shown. At first I had no idea what this meant, was it a bug? I believe this is because one is the main territory with the city and the others are attached territories with outposts?

Recommendation: Need some way to tell each territory apart, something like Hattusa (City) / Hattusa (Outpost 1) / Hattusa (Outpost 2) might help, with a show me icon to take me to each one.

Miscellenous

Issue: This menu is bad, 3 options all with the same name. There needs to be an easy way to distinguish between them. Currently you have to hit the show me button on each to check it's the correct one.

Recommendation: Perhaps we should be given the option to rename Outposts? Or why not give Outposts randomly generated names to help tell them apart?

Issue: When splitting/transferring units into a new army it must be done one unit at a time. If this is possible I'm not sure how to do it.
Recommendation: Please allow for multiple units to be selected with shift+click or similar to transfer multiple units into a new army in one go, instead of 1 unit at a time.

Issue: What is my total science income per turn? It’s not listed on science button hover over or on click.I have gold and fame income here but not science? Why is science excluded? Eventually I found it on the tech tree screen. Bit out of the way, why hide it in a menu?

Recommendation: It would be nice to quickly see total science income, either up with the Fame and Gold income or by hovering over the science button.

Issue: When zoomed out it isnt obvious who owns what territory, the borders are thin.

Recommendation: Why not give each territory a semi-transparent colour based on the Empire controlling it? Something similar to the Society overview but for territory?

It could be expanded upon further for example with dark blue for the regions I own with Cities in them, and a lighter blue for territory with just outposts. Maybe even a lined effect on territory where an outpost is being built to indicate that it is currently being claimed? This could be a toggleable overlay mode.

I havent done much combat yet in this game so I'll add some more info here later if I find any problems.

What does everyone else think? Any alternate suggestions for any of these points brought up?

All great points! We made some suggestions regarding the city screen in another thread.

This is when the AI buys a resource from you. Definitely needs A LOT more info. Which AI, which resource and how much money it gave you.
