No matter in which setting I play the game, my gpu usage skyrockets! I have a rtx 3080, I think I shouldnt have these issue. Has someone had similar problems with the game?

Might be a driver thing or not enough optimisation on newer GPUs

My 980m 8GB isn't even at 50% so....

Might be worth to check if you're up to date ?

Other than that, there will be patches, the game just came out, so those things will be resolved ^^

It was a major problem for people with top end Nvidia cards (myself included) during the closed beta.

Here is the best archived thread on it, for info (no sense posting on this link):

https://www.games2gether.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/forums/212-closed-beta/threads/40766-overheating-optimization

It's definitely better now. I had to play on lowest graphics with my FPS locked to 30 during the Beta, and it was still overheating my GPU then. Now I can play on Simple with 90 FPS and it only pushes all four of my fans to about 50% on their curves (on top of liquid cooling) =/ So, still seems to me like there is something very poorly optimized.

I tried playing on higher graphics settings, but my fans kicked up to 100% within 30 seconds of loading into the Neolithic Age, so I just scaled down graphics until the fans hit 50% (which is all the fan noise I can take without going crazy).

You may get posts like Rexeits saying the game runs fine on lower end cards. That was the case during the last Beta as well. People with older cards weren't having the problem, but people with 2080ti's and 3080's were hitting 99% GPU usage, 100% fans, and still pushing dangerous heat levels.

Thanks for your answers friends!

Yes, consider the game is very fresh it would not be very well optimized at this point, got pretty scared by the usage nevertheless. I lowered the settings and it runs pretty smoothly now.

I'ld be more worried for people gaming on a laptop. Thermals is so important for the well being of your computer, even more for a laptop. Please monitor your temperatures

For an AMD CPU: 80-85° is ideal

85-100°: Ok temperature

100 +: I'ld advice you to stop and wait for a fix or at least you'ld need to tweak your stettings.

For an NVIDIA GPU: I'ld stop the experiment if your GPU'ld go over 95°

Once again those are laptop temps.

Is your fps really high? Like 200+? That's perfectly normal, your GPU will output frames at its maximum capacity unless limited (given your CPU is very good and not bottlenecking). Just limit your fps from the NVIDIA control panel Globally (not just for Humankind) to your monitor refresh rate. No need to tax your GPU past that (like 400fps) as you don't see those frames at all.

There is also an in-game option to limit frame-rate. If you are experiencing high CPU or GPU temperatures, we recommend enabling either VSync or the FPS lock.

I have a i7-6700HQ, 16gb DDR4 and like I said a 980m 8GB, of course it's in a laptop

And no problem whatsoever with my 6yo machine on good quality :P

If you want to reduce your usage/heat, definitely cap your FPS or activate V-SYNC, it will restrain your components and not let them ramp up to infinity to get the best result possible

It's not a competitive FPS or racing game, you can play at 30-60 fps :')

Yeah, it's a pretty normal reaction

If changing the options in-game don't change anything or barely, it might be worth changing them in the Nvidia control pannel, just take screenshot/picture of the default settings before changing anything tho :P

I have a RTX 2080 and I have this problem. Locking down the fps in game (even all the way down to 40) barely has an effect. There is definitely an issue with higher end cards.

Lower end cards too, FPS capped at 60 with a GTX 1060 3GB (the recommended settings card on steam) and even on the lowest graphics setting my GPU is at 100% usage.
