The civic "Colonization" uses the term "captured city", but the game fails to define what counts as a "captured city".

The help page have no info on "captured city".

If you are at war with another Empire, and you successfully besiege a city, that city gets the tag "occupied". However occupied cities do not produce, so the "Subservant" effect that gives a boost to production makes no sense.

You would think then that all cities that were build by other Empires then counted as "captured", however I cannot see the "subservant effect" on those either. I can also not see any increase in production on cities I have captured.

I seems to me the civic does not work.

The term "Captured city" applies once is under your domain. The case when you are at war and you "win" the city (but didn´t finish the war) is a temporary occupation, that will turns out/or not once you have the negotiations of surrender in which you decide which cities you get/give.

Do assimilated independent cities also count as captured cities?

Once assimilated they are no longer Independent, they are part of your cities :)

Sorry, maybe I have to ask differently.

Any city in my domain is either founded by myself, captured in a war against an AI player, assimilated from an independet people or captured from an independet people by force.

So is there a difference between a city that you gain from assimilation and a city that you take by force from an independent people? Does an assimilated formerly independent city count as a captured city in your empire? Does a conquered formerly independent city count as a captured city in your empire? Or is the term captured city only reserved for a city that you gain in surrender negotiations with a major AI player?

I have checked with the team and you encounter a bug (so I will move the thread to the bug report). Apparently the status of captured city is applied during the war but then it disappear once is under your control.

At times like this I wonder, if devs (aside of community managers) even play their own game...

I know devs of Amplitude once played their own games years ago. I remember one of them writing, they are not allowed to do so no more at work. At least this is what I understood, when reading the posted text.
