Increase deployment zones

I propose to make the deployment zones in battles 2-3 times as big as they are now. This would have a number of benefits:

  1. A bigger deployment zone could give the defender the option to move troops a bit away from the front line. This could blunt the attacker's advantage of moving first and already taking out a few defenders before they have a chance to strike, if the distance is a large enough that some, or at least more, of the attacker's unit cannot immediately close the distance and attack.
  2. It would allow more use of terrain. The way terrain features in HK combat is really good. But I feel like sometimes it's difficult to make use of it because the game gives us very little room to position our troops outside of choosing which army to attack what stack from what tile and direction. Yes, that is a genuine part of strategy, but still. Historically, armies would find the most suitable locations locallly for their set-up, once a battle is inevitable.

I appreciate that change may bring some issues. For one, the capture the flag element might need to be tweaked. But maybe that's also an opportunity to let the factions choose where that flag should be. If it represents the general's camp, then surely the general commanding the battle should have say where it goes. Another consequence is that battles may tend to drag out longer because less damage is dealt in the first round. This need not be a bad thing, though some people may not like it. Lastly, there may also be practical issues in reworking the algorithm that determines the deployment zones. It may take a while to fine tune it until it delivers logical results. One could go the whole hog and make the entire battle zone a deployment area but that might go too far and consume too many turns finding the enemy.

Any views from others? Are there any drawbacks that I missed, in particular fatal ones? Or conversely maybe additional advantages that I didn't think of? Maybe a question towards the devs what the original rationale was for the deployment zones as they are now? Maybe different options were tested and found to not work well or not be fun?

Hey there!

Well to be fully transparent it's something we might first consider for naval battles to try it out. For land battles it looks like it could require a lot of developpement and balancing, but let's see what comes out from our investigation.

Nevertheless, it's an idea I really do like, specially for later eras with big big armies.

Have a very nice day

I'm not sure how relevant it would be to increase the deployment zones, but I agree that the possibility of choosing where to plant the flag would be very beneficial. It would greatly reduce the disadvantage of being the second to attack, being stuck to a flag on an unfavorable field, where it is not practical to deliver the flag or defend until the tie.

It would only be necessary to prevent the flag from being planted in a panel inaccessible to the combat zone.
