About a year ago I posted this in the Game Ideas forum. Now that there is a dedicated ideas section, I'll add it here.

First off, a few others have had similar ideas. If you like them, go give them support:

Artesim talks about grouped era progression https://community.amplitude-studios.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/ideas/3043-grouped-era-progression

RedHL03 has a simple start/end era request: https://community.amplitude-studios.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/ideas/2963-era-selection

Basically, I would like a way for all players to stay in a certain era until X (where X can be a vote, or some other trigger).  I like the detailed idea that Artesim raised, but I'm not sure it needs to be so complicated. Just advance when half the players reach 7 stars. Or in single players games, whenever the human decides. Also, this should be an optional game rule at the setup (just like in Civ... actually Civ has this already).

Why do i want this? Because I really want to experience the era. I want to be able to have a full war vs similar tech enemies. Currently, even on endless speed, it seems the eras go by too fast. Especially the early eras where you are still far from any AI - you never get a chance to use you EU because you never get in a war.

I see some pushback because of the science affinity means those cultures will be a full tech level ahead. Perhaps that can be turned off with this optional feature.
