More avatars do want! :)

It seems like a legitimate concern for the moderators, to avoid X-rated avatars. I have never seen this myself on a popular game forum. But I suppose it is possible. It would be a huge amount of work to keep up, if the moderators were responsible for this. However, many forum setups I have seen include a "report this post" button on every post. Perhaps the moderators have turned this off. I suppose that if there were a "report this post" button, and any user saw an offensive avatar, they would use this button. I think this would prevent the work of moderators feeling responsible to review every avatar. I do not know how much work would be added by investigating false alarms of this button. But I have never seen this problem on other popular game forums.

What makes me laugh, it's that DEVs want us to improve the game, but they don't want us to improve the forum, totally awesome smiley: biggrin

Ok, they want a kind of "homogeneous" forum, but it's not good for us to be forced to choose your avatars, what's this? kind of totalitarian regime? It's the first time I see this, we are at least 10k people (for now), and I think they aren't good enough to create so many avatars, so we'll always see other members with the same avatar, very usefull...

And the most unfair part of this it's that YOU moderators can change your avatars, what the big idea? We don't deserve it? You just want to force us to choose YOUR avatars? Are you so proud of them???

I have never seen any problem in members getting their own avatars, I don't even know where this idea came from, I think we should be able to choose our avatars, and I think that if your avatars are more awesome than any of those we can find, so we'll choose them and it'll be a proper recognition.

And if you want homogeneity, so EVERYONE shall follow the same rules, as in a democratic regime.

Sorry for being rude but I just can't understand this.

I guess I don't feel so strongly about it, but I agree with Randeng that almost all forums I use allow custom avatars. If there is a reason (aesthetics, disk space?) why this forum does not want to allow it, please let us know.

And what about what we want? This isn't the main purpose of this game, what does the consummer wants?

And why're are you allowed to change? And VIP or ninja? You're more than us? I guess we're nothing so, just forced to follow some unfair rules, like obediant sheep

There are other game forums that use a predefined set of avatars and don't allow custom ones, no need to post links right here (but I can provide links to the curious of you through PM). There will be a lot more ES avatars that you would be able to choose from, so have patience.

I'm not waiting for more ES avatar, just want to have the same rights as yours, and I think that will be fair if EVERYONE has the same rights.

Ok, you're moderators, but it means that you must watch the forum, having a new avatar doesn't make you more efficient... So why have you the right to choose, and not us?

Let's see what you'll answer.

First of all calm down, we are not fighting here so let's have a reasonable conversation. To answer your question and to explain the decision of not allowing custom avatars, the forum is growing rapidly, thousands of new members have registered in just over a week. Having said that, we are enough people to be able to keep the order and look for everybody to follow the rules but we are not machines and we are not capable of monitoring 13000 avatars that can be changed by the user any second. Pornography or other material forbidden by the forum rules could easily slip unnoticed with custom avatars and that's an additional work that we want to avoid. We want this forum to be clean of offensive content and having a set of predefined avatars is something that helps achieve that goal. That's just one of the reasons behind this decision.

We are aware that the avatars are not enough for everybody to have a unique avatar, and the artists are working on providing more. But have in mind that there are priorities and currently avatars are not at the top of the list. So I'm asking of you to be patient when it comes to forum avatars, more are on the way. Several Hissho avatars have just been added to the list and more will be added in due time.

Are you serious claiming "pornography" in avatars?? You didn't find anything else?

Never seen this before, you beat me.

I just want to say stg now, look at the avatar definition:

3. (Electronics & Computer Science / Computer Science) a movable image that represents a person in a virtual reality environment or in cyberspace

In computing, an avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego or character. It may take either a three-dimensional form, as in games or virtual worlds, or a two-dimensional form as an icon in Internet forums and other online communities. It can also refer to a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. It is an object representing the user. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_%28computing%29

an electronic image that represents and is manipulated by a computer user (as in a computer game)

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/avatar

Can you explain me how an avatar can represent myself if I can't choose it please? Because I don't know...

Using the pretext of "homogeneity" and then "pornography" means that you're clearly unable to say what's the real matter of that, and the main problem is that at the end, you force us to do something, you don't even care about our requests (and it's just a little one).

I've seen a lot of forums, never seen "pornography" or I don't know what you can involve. And I think that if someone really do this, then YOU are here to fix it. Like if policemen force us to stay at home just for preventig us to be hurt or to kill someone else, where's the part of human being in that?

And i'm not angry, just saying my opinion.

We are not denying anything, by registering to this forum Amplitude Studios provides you with the opportunity and privilege to become a member of this community. In return it asks of you to follow the Forum Rules, nothing more nothing less. You are not forced to do anything, including choosing one of the avatars that can be used on the forums. You have the opportunity to use them if you like them, but you are not forced to do so.

On your other point, you can't believe that an avatar can contain offensive material? Really? Pornography was mentioned as an example of forbidden material, but the Forum Rules mention a number of categories in that regard.

And thanks for the links but I already know what an avatar is.

Okay, I've got it, we have to follow the rules, not you, pretty much clear now, thanks smiley: wink

And btw, if you're sooo afraid about "pornography" or dunno what, how about allowing personnal avatars for 1 week or 1 month members only? I don't think a person would register, waiting for 1 month just for putting an insane avatar^^

I see this debate is over since the begining, we'll continue to "follow holy rules", I'm just afraid that this kind of injustice will occur many times during the game development, but that's another problem^^

More avatars would be great, atleast to add some diversity, but the game comes first :P

The layout is pretty minimalistic with lots of white & grey, to see it filled up with oversized image signatures would be a big contrast difference, not to mention add an even larger workload on the forum moderators, checking signature sizes and whether something is inappropriate material, always a fun grey-zone aswel.

Neither do i smiley: biggrin But they've already ruled and won't change their mind so it's useless to talk, I've decided to remove my avatar, it will be easier to recognize me, don't wanna be a "Dolly" (see the joke? smiley: stickouttongue)

I think we have the nicest moderators in the world/galaxy/endless space, and I am thankful to them. This is an outstanding forum, I'm proud to be a part of it, and all of us have a common purpose: we look forward for ES to be an outstanding 4X game.

I don't think that's what he meant. Allowing custom avatars for members older than a week, or a month only.

Oh indeed, I must was tired when I read that. I don't know how I misunderstood that. smiley: biggrin

But still, this avatar thing has somehow become an issue: we simply wanted people to have avatars related to the game. Like Raptor mentioned previously: we cannot make sure everybody is going to follow the rules. We are 15 at Amplitude, and we have the honour of having a few volunteer forum moderators who can help us. However, you don't seem to realise the amount of work this avatar thing represents, adding to the website and forums evolutions we are working on.

The number of registered users has greatly increased, and we will make more avatars for the forums; that is all we can promise at the moment.
