Agreed. It should apply to all units: Constructed units, purchased units, as well as free units (whether obtained via quest, converted village or Proliferator).

I fully agree that retrofitting should be based on the base unit rather than direct line of unbroken edits.

I like the idea, but it would impede on mp games. With that system, it seems like attempting to retrofit an army of different units would take longer. You would have to select the template for each unit you are planning to retrofit.

It would only take longer if you have more than one design of that unit, and by longer I mean 3 seconds longer.

When you click on the retrofit button, if you only have one design of that specific unit type, just switch to it.

If you have multiple designs of that specific unit type, then popup a window that lets you select which one you want.

For each base unit, you should be able to have any number of templates.

Templates can be added, modified or removed.

Every unit should be retrofittable to any of the templates of the same base.

When constructing units, first you should need to select the base unit, then it will prompt you to select from among any of the existing templates for that base unit, or develop a new template.

When retrofitting units, first you should have to click retrofit, then it will prompt you to select from among any of the existing templates for that base unit, or develop a new template.

This way, if you have a different unit design line, it doesn't matter (and why should it?) because the base unit is the same.

This way, if you delete a template for which you have existing units, it doesn't matter (and why should it?) because the base unit is the same.

Yeah, it kind of does. Unless you start the game with two designs and build equal units of both- but it will make balancing all that more annoying. Good idea.
