I'll try to add a more complete picture, what do you think would be nice? An exterior view of the city, troops on the march, an inside scene from the Cult life?
In any case, my stance is that I want them to stay quite focused on people rather than automatons. We already have quite a few robotic/golem like elements in EL so far (vaulters titans, BL, Harmonites) and we may have some more.
My first post on this forum, been lurking for a while and now I decided to give this competition a try.
Nosferatiel's faction was really inspiring, so this is my interpretation of Cultists of the Eternal End.
Didn't have time to join earlier so this will be in a form of few drawings, nothing too specific, just some designs which will represent the general feel of the faction I had in my mind. Might be a total miss, but was worth a try.
I want to start with architecture. What I had in mind were tall stone towers with organic cores, combination of technology and remains of living organisms. Wanted to maintain the simplistic "obelix/monolith/mausoleum" look but break the form a bit with situational ornaments. So it it gives a nice balance of "menacing" and "sublime".

I pictured the building method as shown in the first picture, starting as enormous stone buildings, OMCETS slowly start to build the "organic spiral" in the center from the remains of dead or sacrificed cultists. As that organic/synthetic mass of flesh, bones, tissue and metal is growing inside, it starts to elevate the building. As it becomes taller and taller, little obedient OMCETS slowly start filling the holes from the top to the bottom, protecting the soft structure within with a layer of stone. Over the time towers become bigger and bigger, but the spirals are almost always exposed at the bottom. So the inside of the buildings is mainly tunnels and rooms made out of bones and metal, while the outside walls are smooth stone. But this pretty much only applies to the lore, since there won't be apparent advancement with the city look in game, I think.
Next are couple of character/unit designs. While none of these really fill a role of a certain unit perfectly, I just wanted to post them so you get the general vibe and theme I had in mind.
Possible concept of The Nameless Guard, or maybe a generic infantry unit:

Since this faction pretty much relies on robots/automatons as core units (outside of exploiting minor factions), I wanted to experiment with different types of automatons and what roles could they have. Their look is strongly tied to the architecture of the faction, maintaining the same elongated simple shapes with heavy ornaments on certain spots. The masks of a generic, androgynous face which all the automatons have is the representation of the Queen herself (but maybe not literal, since she isn't necessarily human-looking) and the direct connection she has with them since they basically serve as her eyes, ears and limbs. They are crudely bolted to smooth face surfaces, and other than being ornaments serve no other purpose. Except maybe giving other factions nightmares.
Now, all these could work without the faces too if it is not appropriate, lore wise. Can post face-less versions too.
Three different types of guards, medic, scientist and a guardsman without the mask:

Drone concepts, both humanoid and... drone-ish. Again with the empty face symbol.

Humanoid cultist in simple robes and automaton preacher:

Heavy automaton unit, Scarab:

Their movement is clumsy, like a bear with human limbs. Their bellies are full of spikes, so one can say they kill you by "awkwardly hugging you". Nah, they stomp you to death like a metal baby-faced rhino monster.
The thing what I tried to accomplish with these designs are elegant but disproportionate shapes and slight "uncanny valley" effect. Stylish but creepy empty shells which are controlled by a mysterious entombed being.
I want to go further into the details a bit more so I'll will try to update this post tomorrow with some more sketches and more info.
All CC welcome!
I messed up attachments completely.
Haha quite new here and first things i see are those awesome competitions.
I have to say i realy like the automatons but while i like the faces on the architecture ; ) (reminds me a bit on the Necromonger towers from ridick)
i would rather like some faceless automatons imo.
Cause why would they be so obsessed with humanoid faces while actually being a interspecies cult as far as i understood their idea right.

If I can wish for anything, can I see a view of the city from the front, walls and gates before a treck of cultists transporting tributes to the Queen, the gates opened and showing the buildings, the city center, if it's very high, in the background?
That'd be an exterior view of the city + an inside scene from Cult life, at once.

I can try!
So what would be your feelings about the presented units so far?

I'll make some comments, unit by unit. Generally, the red, gold and black graphics do seem to fit a rather glorious version of the cult. Totally fine with me. ^^

Banshee
Recuited mostly among female cultists, the banshees have been gifted with loud speakers and psychic projection devices. When charging on the battlefield they can realy and unleash the screams and anger of the Queen herself with devastating effects on the enemies which more than compensate for their lack of protection of those nimble fighters.
I'm not sure what you mean with "they can realy". Furthermore, aggression, anger and screams are things I'd rather attribute to the Unspoken than the Queen.
And I'm not sure what psychic projection devices are supposed to be.
I like having nimble fighters as a basic unit for the cultists. The design seems to be remotely egyptian, to me (maybe it's the headgear or the bindings, it just makes that impression on me). Having a secondary short weapon should they loose their glaives seems sensible to me, although I cannot imagine a reason to draw both, at once. (Looks stylish, still makes no sense )
uriak wrote: Janissary
As hostility grew toward the Cult, the need arose to keep guard and scout for possible incoming armies. The centaurs that joined were helpful but there were not enough of them. From the innards of the city, cultist have unearthed old parts and began affixing it to volunteers. Thus were born the Janissaries, able to outrun most soldiers and safely drench them with bolts and arrows
Seems to be inspired by Dishonored.
As far as I understand them they'd be ranged cavalry. That's new and therefore exciting. Still a bit too close for comfort to the Dishonored version...
uriak wrote: Djinn
Djinns are a sight to behold, able to stay aborne through the help of a forgotten technology. Our men calls them the cult devils, for they can unleash the horrible Red Dust, a ravenous variety of the commun substance that will aggressively feed on anything it surrounds. Those dangerous clouds stays on the battlefield, harming and ampering anyone who doesn't flee in time.
I just like the idea of airborne dust(flame)-thrower wielding cultists with headgear alike to medieval pest doctors. Hard to balance, but this is really your best unit, so far.
uriak wrote: Immortals
The cult has for long taken a rather low stance, but as tension rise, those who oppose it will certainly turn their sight to the Queen temple. With this in mind, the followers, helped by their Gods have looked to revive the most powerful artefacts and servitors left by their ancestry. They couldn't revive the servitors... not entirely. But now whoever approach the holy lands of the Cult will face those hulking monstrousities. Under their imposing armor one can see moving metal and other mysterious materials. Maybe something is still alive inside those husks. Something with a relentless will to live. Their bodies repair themselves earning them their name.
Having a robotic construct fits the lore, nicely. Especially as a major unit. I'd have expected more differences in regard to the so far humanoid-only cultist units, though. Seeing the gears and machinery you describe as visible would help very much in improving this unit, even more, in terms of optics.
uriak wrote: Harbinger of Dawn
Spreading the word of the Gods is a difficult task. Bound to an imposing throne, The Harbinger dedicates his life to this important task, physically in connection with the Queen and her First Servant.
I'm not sure what dawn has to do with the cultists. Dusk would be far more fitting.
In any case, a harbinger is supposed to be a "caravan leader" of the cult. Having him on a floating throne is... more extravagant than I'd have believed. The job seems to be quite comfortable.
Finally, let me conclude that you're one of the artists with the best handdrawn entries for this competition, so far, in my opinion.
I have one question, though: If the buildings are organic, inside, they should have some metabolism. Where does the food go in, the waste go out and where in between (hopefully by a different way) do cultists enter and exit the buildings on top of the organic spires? Couldn't find that on your pictures.
I should have been more clear, sorry. I just suck at explaining thing. I didn't picture them to be living beings. Just spirals which would look organic because they are made out of substance which OMCETS are producing out of dead cultists. So I wanted to do some sort of mixture or "wires and flesh" if that makes sense. So the insides would have asymmetrical hallways and rooms, like you are walking inside a veins and stuff. Except top of the towers which still have regular rectangle rooms and hallways, like central tomb tower for example.

Yeah I do have some hero designs in mind. But I'm still confused if heroes should be robots or cultists. I will still post some more drawings.

I will do the faceless versions too. The idea I had behind the faces was to try to illustrate their hatred or mockery of the ideals. So it's apparent that faces don't fit, and give the uneasy vibe. But also do give a unified look for all the members of the "hivemind", which are the automatons.
Thanks for all the feedback guys! Glad you like them!
Will update my original post later today with some cultists designs, and more general city/street scenes.
Telum wrote: Yeah I do have some hero designs in mind. But I'm still confused if heroes should be robots or cultists. I will still post some more drawings.
I'm probably biased, but personally I would go for robot hero. Why? 1) Because heroes need to be able to recruited by every factions. Hence why all necrophage heroes are altered by dust. Thats also why cravers and harmony heroes in ES work with other factions. So having cultist robots that have become sentient/hayware because of dust and so be able to work with other factions sounds better than cultist who is enough open minded to work with heathens against his own kind. If cultist has lost his faith and that is why he works with other factions, then hes not really cultist anymore is he? Though I guess if he would be cyborg or something then... Oops, getting sidetracked. 2) Because its far too easy to make cultist hero to be a human and that'd be lame. Vaulter heroes are already human. More non human units/characters the better I say 3) Majority of cultists' believers are minor faction races and you can't make a hero that is somehow able to be all of 15 minor factions at same time.

1) I wouldn't go for a robotic hero. The heroes of the cult should be cultists taught by the Unspoken about wielding the powers of dust.
The Unspoken himself is very random and unpredictable, it is likely that his disciples will inherit those traits. Maybe they'll even start working for another faction with the hope of converting that faction to their religion. Or getting close enough to the leader of the faction to assassinate him. Or entering battle for the single reason that it's fun! 3
On the other hand, I cannot secondguess the Unspoken if he chooses to randomly give some robotic servants dustpowers...
2) Cultist heroes don't have to be humanoid. Actually, they could be of any major or minor faction.
3) You do not have to make 15 heroes for the cultists. But you could just choose a minor faction you like and make a background story you envision for making any of these factions a cultistic hero.

You are completely right. With all 3 points. I totally forgot about hero market feature. Robot heroes make more sense being recruited by other factions.
So from both lore and gameplay view robot heroes and cultist units could work a lot better. Also with robot units. But robot heroes in any case.

Then again this makes sense too. But personally I like the idea of Queen's/Unspoken's automatons leading "lesser, expendable" races to battle better.
I'll play with both cases a bit and try to draw few situations.

Dunno, I'd be horribly annoyed if I have to stuck only with one of 15 minor factino as heroes And I know devs won't do models for all of them since all of faction heroes have like 3 different models or something? So there being only like three or whatever different hero races would be annoying for me. Also, yes, they don't have to be humanoid, but people usually do humanoids due to them being easier to do.
Yeaaaaah, I'm pretty sure that Unspoken could as well dumb dust on robots to see what happens.*shrugs* Thats pretty random and would certainly lead to strange abilities. After all, dust is nanobots that have magic like abilities, so that means even robot could do what appears to be "magic". Though the cultist hero joining other faction to betray them doesn't make sense when that hero is leading assault on Cultist capital to seal Queen off permanently xD
In the end, its just my personal opinion. Robots are unique to Cultists, so robot hero would be something unique as well. So that'd be cool. Plus I'm assuming that we will eventually in expansions get minor faction heroes anyway even though devs aren't planning them yet so the minor faction cultist heroes wouldn't be that unique. Though thats more of excuse really, I just think that if we are gonna have fantasy robot units, we might as well go beyond and have cool fantasy robot hero as well. Since it'd be cool, duh.
So question: in the rules of the competition, can only one entry win?
Because personally, I think the best option would be combining Telum's buildings and automatons with Uriak's humanoid cultists. It would make for an interesting contrast, the cultists with golden masks and the automatons with metal faces.
If only one of them can win, we'd be missing out on some very cool designs.
In regards to uriak. Our units seem to be very similar at the moment (middle eastern/ ottoman inspiration) and I just wanted to disclaim before hand that I had come up with them before seeing your post .

Mostly technobabble, hey it's a world ripe with dust! But it's not only auditory in nature. I dunno, I know the Unspoken is supposed to be the aggresive one, but when you consider his name, and the fact the queen is an intelligent being trapped for eons, it's not difficult to imagine her sounding angry. Or maybe that's the narrative the cultist use with their enemies...
Seems to be inspired by Dishonored.
As far as I understand them they'd be ranged cavalry. That's new and therefore exciting. Still a bit too close for comfort to the Dishonored version...
Haha my brother worked on this game
But well, if robotic legs on themselves aren't something never seen, this kind of silhouette is more peculiar. I'm not too comfortable with giving them massive implements, I like the idea of a nimble army for most units. Myabe I should make their silhouette more different, but the crossbow + shield combo is a rather present element of EL, so well it seems it could fit nicely
I'm not sure what dawn has to do with the cultists. Dusk would be far more fitting.

I kinda overlook the whole naming. My idea was to make a "dawn" and "dusk" themed pair of heroes. The reason behind it (and the color scheme) is I didn't want the cult to be gloomy. Sinister, menacing, yes? But it would be logical that they aren't the baddies of their own story, what they want is a glorious destiny. Hence the red and golden color theme. So that hero would be the one who rouse his servant and spread the word, hence dawn. The dusk would have been the more morbid and dangerous zealoth, but well it was late and I couldn't get the strenth to design a 6th character

That problem here is rooted in my lore, I believe. The cultists do support three different styles:
Rundown ancient Endless, e.g. the city center and any starting unit: Old, fallen in, placid, glorious
Eternal Queen: Dark, moody, orderly, efficient
Unspoken: Flashy, aggressive, horrible, chaotic
The devs certainly couldn't foresee my love for antagonistic styles.
Here's a first pass at a global version of the city.
In my idea, the servants tends to replicate endlessly parts that were decorated by cultists, without rhyme nor reason. Older and smaller structures are swallowed and fused in larger ones. From afar you can see some flash and veins glowing from dust ore other substances.
I'll try to update some units yesterday if I have the time
So I think everyone else did their versions very well, I doubt I can compete with them, but I can offer my own viewpoint on this.
Hero:
Biography:
He had always felt small, unimportant, just a regular Ettin like any of his fellows. And while he loved his village and his people, it had seemed so small and insignificant. He grew to feel however, that he was different than the others, better, smarter, but in those times of peace and prosperity he had few opportunities. He dreamed of greater things, glory and conquest, changing the world.
With other peoples rising in nearby lands, raiding and pillaging the lands of weaker tribes such as his own, he grew more restless. Better times were well behind them, the winters grew ever longer, food was running out, and incursions from outside groups had almost pushed them to the breaking point. When loud noises and unusually bright lights (the likes of which none had ever seen before) were reported in the nearby ruins, his people feared disaster.
He seized his chance to prove himself by leading a group to discover the truth behind these reports. When the Unspoken appeared to them, they were at first frightened, but gradually calmed as the mysterious being spoke to them. The Unspoken told them of the ancient Gods and of their great might, and how they had abandoned the dying Auriga. This speech changed him, gave him a cause to serve, and more importantly, finally a place to prove himself. He became a fervent believer, giving up all that he had ever been.
Eventually, his whole village was converted and integrated into the Cult, but he had not proven himself. He felt like a failure, his hopes and aspirations crashing down around him. However, he was one of a very small group that showed promise, and was taught be the Unspoken himself, to use the gods’ evil power. The fact that they had to use the God’s power filled him with revulsion, directed at both himself and the vile power itself. For days, he struggled in an internal battle of morals over what he had been given. The turning point came when he came to the revelation that while the power was evil, he had been entrusted with it and he would control it. Finally, overcoming all of the disappointments of his life he finally had the opportunity he was waiting for to prove his worth. He took this power, and for the Cult, he will change the world.
Picture:
Description: This hero is an Ettin granted the power of the Gods by the Unspoken. He is wearing very light armour, he has none covering his joints allowing freedom of movement, for the most part on his body he has leather straps with metal studs covering the length of his arms and legs. On his lower torso he is wearing a combination of plate mail and chain mail, he is tall enough that for an average, say, human that is the area they are most likely to attack as his lower torso is around an average human's elbow height. He is wielding both metal claws attached to his right glove, and a hand-and-a-half sword in his left hand. I couldn't really get the arm proportions right for the left arm, so just know he is using the same leather armour and gloves (but without claws) for his left arm and hand. In a pattern on his chest, is a claw, is his symbol of the Cultists, he wears it proudly on his chest as he is a military commander and not one to hide. The other symbol near the center of his torso and on his left head's right eye is what represents him as receiving the power of the Gods. I tried to make this pattern sort of like the Amoebas, it shines through is skin so it is a faint yellow and doesn't extend very far, I did try to make it look like a sort of cyborg combination of circuit board turning blood vessel. And overall he is a military leader, I couldn't think of the right name for him as an Ettin, though Casimir did sound nice to me, I think it would be more fitting though, for his name to be his military title instead, I chose at first "Grand Inquisitor", adding a religious feel to the title.
Units:
Unfortunately I was unable to draw models for the Units and i would not like to use another's art. however, I believe that my suggestion of units back in my own faction's post works quite well here.
Adventurer_Blitz; wrote: However, i would like their original unit to be a sort of refugee infantry group of different races wearing the same uniform, acting in unison, etc.
Basically, I think the two later game units could be mixes of minor factions, allow wearing the same uniform displaying the Cultists' symbol proudly and visibly in different combinations. I believe cavalry and ranged would go well with this one, cavalry being the Bos being ridden by some other minor faction such as the Delvers or the Sisters of Mercy, in a sort symbiotic relationship of Centaur and rider. The ranged would just be another combination of Ettins and a melee faction, the Ettins would use ranged attacks while the others would protect them, meaning a weaker overall ranged unit, but one with high defense. For the starting unit of Infantry, I imagine some Endless Robots would be fitting, sci fi esque with bright lights, but overall mostly for defense and not for offense and also slow.
City:
So for the city, i had quite a few ideas. I wanted the whole city to have a sci fi feel to it while still being in the realm of fantasy. First, the starting district would have a large spire dominating the whole area, surrounded by these large square towers which are the Cultists' attempt to imitate skyscrapers. All of the Cultists buildings are going to be made out of variations of the same stone, so they share a similar, very dark muted color, they will also have OMCETs on the spires and square towers. All large Cultist buildings and some fo the smallerr ones will also have small and bright crystals on the side, the Cultist city is almost entirely symmetrical except for these crystals.
Spire Picture:
So the tower is a very tall multi-tiered tower rising form the ground. The base will be fairly tall and very wide, and there a four huge, curved supports looking a bit like the ends of primitive rockets and the feathers of arrows, these will both contribute to allow a very strong base of support for the tower to not fall down. The sides of the tower are going to be smooth, made up of one material and the same color, there will be shards of crystals put up by the Cultists as well as many OMCETs along the sides. The top of the tower is flat and acts as a construction area where the OMCETs are constantly building the tower up higher.
Square Tower Picture:
These towers are an attempt of primitive peoples to create a modern structure. These are built in a similar manner to our skyscrapers except use a different building material. they cannot go up as far as our skyscrapers but they will act like shorter versions of them. They are basically a shorter and blacker version of the Empire State Building in the picture shown. Located within are the living quarters of large amounts of Cultists, some shops, and libraries.
Here are some pictures of a 3D model I made of my view of the city using minecraft:
And here is an overview of the parts of the above model:
The main district is dominated by the central spire, surrounded by the tall square towers. The outlying districts each have a smaller spire imitating the main spire, and shorter towers, imitating the tall square towers surrounding the main tower. In each district, most of the Cultist population lives in either the towers, or small groups of buildings near each other in a sort of plaza. The roads and the ground in the Plaza areas, are all paved in a dark material, similar to, but not the same as their building material. Each district is almost entirely symmetrical except for the red crystals located on the larger buildings and some of the smaller ones.
Here is my attempt to create a 3D model of a small plaza using minecraft:
This is a large plaza, with small buildings able to house a number of Cultists within. there are two small towers in the center, they are designed to house shops and small libraries, as well as offices. The plaza in my model is quite empty, I imagine it would be filled by people, carts, small stands, etc. that i was unable to create satisfactorily. The plazas in the city, i imagine, would be mostly used for markets, fairs, public meetings, executions, announcements, etc. that affect a large portion of the population.
The small red crystals would be very bright, attached to many buildings, they follow completely random patterns, disrupting the city's symmetry.
Here is a 3d model I made of what the crystals could look like:
