Faction Creation Contest | Game Design

Reply

Hey guys and gals!

Thanks to all of you who participated, voted, or both! The Endless Space 2 Faction Creation attracted 185 submissions! There were some hiccups along the way, so we tried to find a compromise that would be the fairest to all participants. To that end, we selected the top twelve most popular entries, instead of the usual three. We know this doesn't solve all issues that were brought up, but we hope this alleviates them. Moving forward, we'll be proceeding a little differently to make sure that everybody gets a fair chance.

Without further ado, here are the most popular Major Faction designs! Click on the entries for a link to the submission threads proper, to check out what their gameplay entails! Click the  icon to vote for a submission!

PLEASE NOTE THAT AT THIS STEP YOU CAN ONLY VOTE FOR ONE SUBMISSION AND CANNOT REALLOCATE YOUR VOTE!

I see them in 15th place

Ahh, still invisible to me. Must be how my monitor displays the list or something. Either it's cool to see the devs doing this, even if it is a bummer to not get picked I'm happy that everyone is being cool about this. Congrats to the people who made it through and I look forward to seeing who gets picked.

I'm sorry I bothered you with my promoting.  I usually say "If you like my entry", I'm not forcing you to vote.  I understand this can work against me and annoy some people, if they have already voted, I just say "Have a nice day!"  If I didnt care about sportsmanship I wouldnt be polite about it, and the "best" idea is purely subjective.  Many people I've contacted didnt even know the contest was going on, so I'm probably bringing in more votes for this competition even if they arent for me.

Did you try advertising on Spacebattles?

I don't mean to sound like a cynic, but your statements here don't seem to make a lot of sense. Of course you aren't going to force people to vote because you have no means to force people to vote (I hope). Also, being polite to the people you want to vote for you is going to work more in your favor than if you speak to them poorly, obviously. Finally, unless you named all the contestants and did not advertise one over the other, I'd say the majority of the votes you are bringing in are probably going to you as is supported by the recent surge that put you in second. Now I don't think you did this deliberately undermine the competition and it does bring in more voters, but it does bring in the voters with a biased that is not entirely their own.

Well it certainly seems like a Contest Promotions Regulatory Committee has formed

Yes I am being polite, I dont want to be rude or harass people, that is against my nature and could get me banned from the G2G forums.  Sure it may work in my favor, it may give me a bias, but still people may read my entry and just think it sucks regardless.

I'd say if anyone has a bias, it certainly is the current winner.  Myself and others did not realize this at first, but he is a well established, popular member.  He has VIP friends, a steam forum with 2k+ members, a twitter with 1k+ followers.  His popularity combined with being one of the early entries in an early voting contest has certainly given him a biased edge that none of us can compete with no matter how hard we try to promote ourselves, and yet we are being scrutenized.  People see the top entry vote count and probably don't want to waste their vote on a lesser contender.  The rest of us don't have those luxuries so we must speak to the Endless fan base on an individual basis.

People can't see scores until after they vote.

I stand corrected.  But anyone can check the original contest forums to see those scores.  People can check with friends to see what the current score is at.  And being the top entry on the finalist list certainly helps.

Just be happy that you weren't disqualified for your bumping, eh?

You seem to place pack mentality bias as a source of blame on the person? It is a known fact that if lots of people do the same thing more people will be inclined to do the same. Like sheep following a Shepard. It's the same for voting, if someone has the most people will feel out of place if they don't vote for him or at least have a look. There is no real way to mitigate this other then NO points showing up at all for anyone. But that is not something people want I believe.

Because some ppl complains about that the higher your theme/submission/whatever the higher score you'll get, just because it is first in the list, maybe before votes submissions should be showed randomly (every time reloading the page, you get a new result) and when you've already voted you can see all submissions setted by points in descending order, so you can easily see, who's on top of the list.

In my opinion, it's the best variant possible.

P.S. Sry for my English, i know that it's awful. Maybe someone will understand me and explain what i've tried to say.

P.P.S. Do i need to create thread for that suggestion so people can upvote it?

What good does it do to throw mud?

I created a website that I'm no longer the boss behind. I'm not even a moderator on my own forums any more. I simply had an idea to create a 4X game fansite and have since walked away from it as the boss. I just contribute now. Life is just too busy for me and Nasarog does a better job of managing it anyway.

Just because I'm a VIP and have friends doesn't mean that my entry has an unfair edge. Hell, you can't even tell who the Unfallen's entry is authored by until you click on it.

Please stop making this personal. If you win, then I'm happy for you. If I win, then I'm happy for myself. If Carolean wins, I'll be happy for him, too.

Let's just try to make it about making the whole process better and stop making it about each other, eh?

Are we even allowed to alter our entries in the finalist stage?  I dont think that was allowed in past contests, entries were locked during the final vote.

A few people are giving me crap cuz of my promotion methods. I'm the one getting the mud flung at me.  I'm just stating how you are promoting using your own tools, which many do agree has given you the edge, and that makes it so other contestants have to approach our advertising in different ways.  Yet when you use as similar methods, like posting in this thread for more votes, no one seems to have issues with that.

What's the issue with posting in this thread? You mean when he let people know that he changed his entry?

This happened the last time too with Endless Legend. A great idea was created, and people got bitter/mad/salty over the winner, who actually had a great idea. It's one of my favorite factions in Endless Legend.

This time around, it's the same thing. There are several great ideas, but only one will win. I wish them all the best of luck!

I think we can all agree that there is a new best choice in town. I know I've already submitted once, and this new one is late, but if enough of the community supports the idea the devs must follow, and we can make Endless Space 2 the game we all truly want it to be.  (Link to new faction)

Its up to Amplitude to moderate the competition not us.

Please just try to be civil and stop antagonizing each other. Be pacifist and diplomatic, eh?
