Should we do a lore pass on the tech tree?

Our first vote of 2018 asks an important question: should we do a lore pass on the tech tree? 


Let's add some context: the tech tree went through numerous modifications and changes over the last year and some, and since the Early Access, because of gameplay needs we have added, tweaked, changed, moved things around... the current tech tree has a fair amount of techs that are completely disconnected from their unlocks. Here's an example:


One of these things is not like the others...


Applied Casimir Effect was a technology players in the first Endless Space loved to rush, as it allowed players to get out of their starting constellation to start exploring the rest of the galaxy. Due to our numerous changes, though, it now unlocks food improvements and specializations. If you're an experienced player, there's a good chance you don't read these things anymore. If you're a new player, though, that's bound to be confusing, and a little less immersing than what you're used to if you like to follow the universe in our games.


This is why we're asking you, our players, new and experienced: should we harmonize it? This might entail moving things around like certain unlocks, icons, or just swapping titles and descriptions in other instances. In any case, it might be a little different at first, and you could need some time to adjust, but we think the tech tree would definitely be better moving forward.


So what do you say? Should we do that lore pass?

Hope this clears that up. :)

I voted NO precisely because this is a false choice(and I am 4% of the NO vote), when a group of people are 93% in favor of something its pretty obvious the question was asked in-such a way as to have bias towards one answer.


If the previous vote had been "Should we do a Battle Tactics Summary?" instead of being given 3 choices you would have absolutly been working on that instead of the MUCH more popular in-game clock.

I think this is very optimistic. to have a good and self consistent tech tree will be achunk of work...and people making one set or changes are unlikly to be the same writers as those who designed the fluff in the first place.

Anyway - Yes, seems an awesome plan.

Awesome to hear you are putting this out there - I was actually reading a tec tree entry at the weekend and wondering why it didn't physically have much to do with what it actually unlocked. I think this aould be great to do.

How does the  technology of the "Cashmir Effect" creat extra food? I deosnt make any sense. Perhapes a new technology should be made for the food related system improvments so that it adds up. Perhapes the Carshir effect should have an impact on the speed of supply and population ships so that it matches witht he discription.

Never quite understood why you guys don't switch tech descriptions, names and symbols when you switch tech effects since it requires null effort.


It's such a huge oversight that I always thought that the dev responsible for the changes was a tad special and everyone else felt bad about pointing out the mistakes made or something equally ridiculous.


Now that I know it was on purpose I don't know what to think... but please do FIX it. It's simple, easy and shouldn't take more than an afternoon to move around some lines of flavour text and a couple of icons... 


Heck why the hell are you guys even questioning us about this!? This should be a no-brainer! We are not toddlers, we can look at the tech tree and see where things are.... I just... I don't understand this issue... You guys are asking us if fixing the tech tree descriptions would be too confusing! THAT'S JUST MADNESS!!!

I played alot in the early acces on steam, and one of the things I most liked was the tech tree. not the new one, with the cirlce, I personally think this is a step backwards. now I can see why the devs did this, and I see how its useful, but I thought it was much better to have the techs all close together, to make it easier to visually see where the techs are, even if they are still sectioned togehter, it made much more sense to me, than to make a huge wheel out of them

Kareal does have a point. It's not clear from the survey what we'd be giving up in favor of this fix. Our imaginations fill the void, if it even bothers to fill it at all.

Argi Drugs needs to be switched with slit second ablatives and Applied Cryogenics needs to be switched with extream composites.

To answer some of the questions brought up here, we are not talking about reworking the tech tree, or changing the techs themselves in a gameplay sense. The only changes in terms of pure gameplay would be techs/unlocks moving around to fit the tree they're in and the theme of the tech.

The lore is what makes the Endless serie so mysterious, attractive, interresting... In one word, so different than other 4X. Sometimes, i play, most of the time, i read and imagine how works this universe. So, yes, this is a great thing to do.

Yes, but should work on balancing and reworking some of the techs first then add in more lore/flow to the tech tree. I'd also love to see details more easily visible for techs as I find myself having to hover over tons of little icons all the time.

Absoultely, not even a question. Though, as others have said, definately consider doing any tech tree updates simulaniously with it to minimize disruption.
