You can tweak the upkeep formula per-ship. It's a combination of the "per ship" cost in ShipDescriptor.xml:

Tweaking the 0.4 in the first snippet would increase cost per-ship, which might make the early game rather difficult for some races. You could probably do something more interesting than "just multiply by MaxCommandPoint" in the second snippet, but I think you've only got addition/multiplication/percentage operators available to perform any calculation with so getting anything with an exponential or logarithmic scale might be a bit tricky. Someone more familiar with modding the XML might be able to come up with something...

Thanks. I'll try this. So far, the only change I've made is to give my custom faction the full "Price of Beauty" trait (+30% ship cost) and to give the AI the following:

Does this solution work correctly? Thanks in advance

but for now: can anyone suggest a good modding solution for someone who doesn't have a taste for having hundreds of ships by mid or late-game? without sacrificing balance? Thanks in advance

yes but if you have 200 000 dust and want buy 6 T4 ship

you buy ale 6 in one system and all buyed can be used in next turn.

In my idea is :

You buy 6 * T4 ship in one system in one turn ...ok... no problem...

But..... first ship received after 4 turns, next after 8 , next after 12 turns... etc...

all 6 purchased ships received after 4*6 turns...

The buyout is only part of the problem: you can easily fleet-spam with high production levels too (building 5+ ships in a turn per system, for example), so changes to the buyout scheme wouldn't be enough to fix it.

I think RobM's generally right: there isn't going to be a one-size-fits-all solution to this given the various racial traits. Any dust upkeep tweaks wouldn't affect Harmony at all, for example.
