@ slowhands: try Elizabeth Moon, I really enjoyed The Deed of Paksenarrion back then and her follow-up series "Paladin's legacy" (3 out of 5 out right now) are actually quite nice.

Besides that Ringo is also ok on military ops. Ah and yeah, Black Company is good stuff.

If animes do count as movies, here, I'll just add a few series... XD

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion (the classic mecha movie)
  • Rah Xephon (another mecha, but even crazier story)
  • Serial Experiments Lain (cyber conspiracy!)
  • Shiki (Blood, vampires, but this time combined with deep moral questions, really nice anime!)

Just a few, but all very good. ^^

Or in any other:

1. Osgiliath

"Here come the orcs in boats across the river!"

"Okay, let them land, and then ambush them when they come ashore! In superior numbers! On solid ground, instead of capsizing their boats and drowning them in their armor and weapons!"

2. Minas Tirith

"Here comes the largest army in Mordor to destroy us!"

"Great! Let them arrive, dig in, set up their siege equipment, ensure their supply lines, and then start throwing rocks at them!"

I don't think Jackson spent much time at West Point/Sandhurst/St. Cyr...

And 10/10 for "Bored of the Rings" -- "Blood-sucking umpires and fungo bats!"

It's not up to Jackson to dictate the tactics and strategy of the men of the west during the assault of Osgiliath and the siege of Minas Tirith, it's up to the characters to do that and they might not be as well versed on these subjects as you. Taking into account that the kingdom was long since in disgrace, with a steward mad if not controlled by the shadow of the dark enemy; can you expect any better? If you take this factors into account, it stands to bear that it was reasonable for these "stupid" decisions to be put into the script, even when they closely mirror what master Tolkien wrote(at least on Minas Tirith)

There are also tactical limitations to the alternatives you present, had the attack on the boats have taken place by means of bow and arrow; it would have been difficult to measure its probable success since it was during the cover of darkness. Additionally such an action would have certainly caused a commotion enough to "wake up" the whole front, something the defenders might not have desired. The siege is a more clear example, if the numerically and "quality"(Armored Trolls vs Halberdiers?) inferior defenders met the attackers on open ground they would have certainly lost. It would have been considerable worst, in military terms as well as a plot device; since it means they stupidly waste their greatest asset, which are the numeronean walls of the city. That strategy worked twice for the men of the west, on Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith; both times justifiably so in my opinion.

Some of my favorite movies(in no particular order):

Back to the Future

Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Star Wars V: Empire Strikes Back

Gladiator

You know, the flying Nazgul can't physically pass between the two side off the street at Minas Tirith...

Ok was it me or...

... John Carter simply the most painful experience I've had in a looong while. I could find no redeeming qualities to that film and I'm not a harsh critic.

Fight Club, that movie is so good.

Le pacte des loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf), the director's cut.

I never say "no" if my wife want to see any of them.

Most favorite ones: The Shawshank Redemption, Lost in translation

After that, about everything with GOOD action. Right now having "Forces spéciales" to watch, looking forward to it.

Most hated one: Highlander Endgame (really, really, really bad and then worse, and then some!)

Either that or the Orcs just facepalmed themselves over the stupidity of the humans so many times they actually got so dumb that everyone thought they were until they got to the point where they facepalmed themselves a serious concussion that proved to be fatal...

But yes, the rants are needed. To bad you had this rant though cause now you increased expectations quite a bit. smiley: smile
