The whole tactics thing drives me nuts in most fantasy writing, so I have to do the occasional rant. There some exceptions from people who are serious military historians or have served in the military (Drake, Weber, Turtledove, and Cook's phenomenal Black Company stuff) but by and large (and almost always in movies) it's just stupid.

And you'd think Darwin would have the bad guys winning in LOTR -- they're way smarter...

"Okay, let them land, and then ambush them when they come ashore! In superior numbers! On solid ground, instead of capsizing their boats and drowning them in their armor and weapons!"

2. Minas Tirith

"Here comes the largest army in Mordor to destroy us!"

"Great! Let them arrive, dig in, set up their siege equipment, ensure their supply lines, and then start throwing rocks at them!"

I don't think Jackson spent much time at West Point/Sandhurst/St. Cyr...

And 10/10 for "Bored of the Rings" -- "Blood-sucking umpires and fungo bats!"

Well, let's face it, tactics in movies usually err do not exist or suck big time.

And between Osgiliath, Minas Tirith and Helm's Deep, well, if the bad guys win, they deserve it because the good guys are actually too stupid to deserve to win...

Slowhands: Awesome to see another person that appreciates the finer art of tactics... Helms deep and firing arrows straight down is even more awesome... yeah lets wait until they arrive at the gates before firing... that will make it easier to hit a sea of orcs cause you only want to kill the ugly ones??!

So the elves in helms deep, the fact there were no battle-tactics during that fight, the induced homoerotic thingy between gimli and legolas and the constant innuendo were not enough to loath the movies?

Yeah we can hope they kept to the book this time around when it comes to the hobbit...

Although after reading "Bored of the rings" I can however laugh at the parody if nothing else and rate it after that.

Actually I'm looking forward to the Hobbit, since it also covers the period between the Hobbit and LOTR. No doubt, like in the movies, the original story will be publicly abused. But if you (like me) are geek enough to buy the extended version and listen to the director's comments and watch the "making of" stuff, Jackson only changed the source material when he had to for reasons of pacing. A lot of it makes sense for that reason (yeah, okay, except for Aragorn taking a dive off the cliff).

But he should still burn in hell for not having done "The Scouring of the Shire"!

the books and the movies are 2 different experiences, usually and not only for LOTR.

There was ONE thing which pissed me off in the movies, that was Gimli being reduced most of the time to the role of comical relief.

I am actually more worried about the Hobbit. Quite sure it shall be a GREAT movie but without much to do with the book at the end of the day.

LOTR?? I still think that the orcs deserved to win all the time in the movies and that they literally raped the books over and over.

As for best movies; I actually dont have much of a favorite movie. I really appreciate new movies though so I go to the cinema alot.
