Renaming something make it more personal and it give you the will to keep it.

What about 3+ differents names for a planet :

1°)The coords , [X,Y] so in multiplayer everyone know what planet you speak of , even if it change of property 10 times a day.

2°)The neutral name. If the planet is neutral in the beginning it have a name. Free of you to change it.

3°) A name for each faction that took it , so it will change everytime the ownership change.

For me default Homeworld names are :

Hiigaraa from Homeworld series.

Argon prime from X3.

Zernihem which is my "Last pseudo name".

and first of them Colchis from War40k.

Hi all,

I have to admit that we had not planned giving the ability to rename the star systems, since we have a good variety of generated system names.

But that much creativity cannot unpunished and we will add the feature to rename owned star systems in the game. We still have name length constraints if we want it to fit to the GUI though, so we will have to come up with a length limit.

Cheers,

This is awesome. Two-thumbs up for Amplitude's funky flexibility.

A couple of questions about possible multiplayer gameplay impacts:

1. Would System name changes be possible upon conquest or whenever with the possibility of always editing one's system.

2. Would other players be informed of such changes? in a game log? or system = Alsace (a.k.a: Elsass)

My gut feeling is to keep it simple when you can, but highlighting a name change to other players after a successful conquest could be a funny way of teasing competition.

I think this might become a bit too confusing, and then if you retake these systems you will have to rename them back, I can see this quickly becoming a nuisance.

Perhaps for multiplayer. make it so only the first player to capture the star system can rename it. That way each player can still make their own "territory" their own so to speak.

Also perhaps a way to make it a bit fairer as well between contested stars. put a time limit on how long you need to control the system, before you can rename the star. That way it sort of makes sure you actually are in control before you can change it and will stop the possibility of a constant name changing star that is heavily contested.

While we're at it, can you confirm what single and multi players will be allowed to name among the following:

  • his fleet(s)
  • his ships (be it capital ships only)
  • Star systems --> Yes according to the above
  • Individual Planets -->
  • Himself
  • ...anything else?

Thanks!

My default homeworld name is Propeta. Pronounce it however you see fit.

I've always liked the ability to name your own stuff. I usually make use of it for naming ships, but I like the idea of being able to name your star systems. It gives the player a little more ownership and personal touch to the game.

While I would most likely never play a multi-player game, I can see a great benefit to being able to rename systems you conquered. It adds to the insult/ridicule factor.....hopefully all in good fun.

"Hey you! Yeah, you! *insert insult of choice here*" Then rename system.

How about Terra?

If I ever play human then Terra is my only choice. Otherwise I use Axiom. Don't know why but most of my system names have X's in them. Perhaps the poor letter doesn't get enough use day to day for me?

One of my favorite features of Spaceward Ho! was how you got to name a star if you won, and the game would then incorporate your new star name into future games. So I slowly populated my copy of the game with planets from all over the science fiction spectrum. Trantor, Skaro, Gallfrey, Mote, Arrakis, Caladan, Ix, Anuurn, Llyene, Akkt, Cyteen, Quozlene, etc etc

I don't know about the others, but story wise Argon was named after R. Gunne and Xenon is from a greek word or something i believe to mean strange. Which i believe the discoverer of the "gas" actually named it the greek word.

Aldebaran.

Since each games will be different and each faction would logically give different names to the same stars, for different "historical" reasons, I think that no matter what naming convention will be used, there should be a value in brackets beside the name that gives the relative location of each stars in respect to the homeworld of the player, followed by the distance from the star. For example, if we use like in Moo2 an absolute name convention fow each star, the third planet from the sun in the star system Rasalhague, located 2 parsecs "north" and 3 parsec "west" of the homeworld should be labeled as : Rasalhague 3 (2,-3 : 3.0)

(3.0: if there were moons, it would be 3.1, 3.2, etc...)

That way there should be less confusion from game to game, in respect to finding whatever planet in your information panel/logs. We could possibly include a customizable auto-naming system, that could be customized please;-) and transported from game to game, that would name colonies using the names sequentially in that list, a bit like Civilization. That way it would help the player, knowing in which order the colonies were founded.
