Endless Space does look like it will have more depth and/or scope than StarDrive. However, I'm still very much looking forward to both!

Between these two games and Legends of Pegasus, it looks like could be a great year for 4x gamers. smiley: biggrin

Yes, I can't imagine moo2 (or any good 4x) without shipbuilding.

Alpha Centauri is also godlike because of this.

I was trying to decide where to put my money between this game, StarDrive and SoaSE Rebellion (ironically it was the email for a $10 off Rebellion that lead me on my path to Endless Space).

Personally I was looking for a pure turn based 4X (something which is a dying breed in video games these days) with an amazing aesthetic that makes me feel like I'm playing a futuristic Space 4X Opera.

I have nothing against StarDrive or SoaSe, personally I love me some Titan Class vessels but when a game is built up from the foundation for turn based game play and built right it will always be my first love. it just feels right to me as a 4X. Rebellion is a real time strategy game, StarDrive is a arcade shooter strategy game that reminds me of Space Rangers (not a bad thing) but those aren't the kind games I was looking for.

Endless Space is just "pure" and beautiful. Its like they are doing everything right.

Why has nobody mentioned Masters of Orion. In my opinion MOO2 was the best 4x in space, and MOO3 was just too much too soon. This game has perfect timing as far as where computers are at and whats possible. From what I've seen of this game it follows in the foot steps of MOO3 (on the scale part) and MOO2 (in the way it feels) very much.

My question would be how does StarDrive differ from Sins of a Solar Empire and GalCiv, which it quite obviously pays a homage to. And by calling it homage, I'm being diplomatic. SD does have something going for it though, it seems to have Sean Connery and Samurai Bear in space, and that's really something.

Yes it is a very important aspect but from what I read about stardrive, this aspect will be overbearing, somehow...

It is one of the main challenges of 4X, to be able to convey all aspects without one being overbearing and leading to micro-management. From what I see in stardrive, you look at micro-management for ship design - which is ok - but also in battle, which is not necessarily what I am looking for in a 4X game.

Hi! Newbie here!

I don't think ship design needs to be overwhelming nor all about micromanagement. I bought the Alpha Funding version of Star Drive and I like the way they did the ship design. It allows you to easily and quickly make your ships using pre-built shp templates (a la Gal Civs) but you can delve deeper and make a tiny freighter ship or a large scout, if you want or any compination in between. I think it's something that should be in Endless Space. To me, the more depth the better, while allowing those who may not want to micromanage too much the ability to quickly pick and choose pre-designed ships. Along with the theme, name, and depth I can see this game touting, ship design is only logical.

Being a rather aggressive gamer, i would have to say i would very likely go to war. But i do like having more depth and options than being forced to always fight when i'd rather do something else to gain territory.

I must say I'm interested in both of them. It is really hard to discuss the differences of two games which are not release yet since features can be added before release. From what I have seen and read what the others said is mostly right. Stardrive clearly focus much more on the combat aspect of the game. Here's what you can read on the official website:

The main economic work in StarDrive is the acquisition of new planetary colonies. Colonies produce resources that are simplified into 4 categories: food, production, research, and money.

It is quite clear that your gonna have to fight most of the time for these colonies and if you read the features of the game on their website 3/4 of it is dedicated to combat. I'm not bashing the game though, I am quite interested in it too and I'm following it's development.

On the same topic, I always wanted a 4x game that gave you choices to develop your colonies and empire without having to always go to war. Everything is always too fast in 4x games. The Exploration part is always the least represented. I'd like a gave where discovering a planet is fun and can be surprising. I wish it took more than just send a scout ship into a system to actually have information on those planets. I am playing a game at the moment called Pride of Nations by Ageod and I must say their colonization system is quite fun. It actually take time and resources to finally ''colonize'' a province (not a planet, it is not a space game lol). It actually gives an impression of personal implication into the colonization and you have to choose carefully where you're gonna focus because you don't have the resources to colonize every provinces in the game.

Ah Sun Tzu, the great father of them all, with Clausewitz as daddy all around.

And yes a strategy is definetly bigger than a tactic

Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.
