It's all personal preference really, i quite like having to quickly adapt to what I'm given, and at least if you get a 'hard' start you can try another game until you find a good start

If it is not that good a system, look for another or re-start until you get one you like. 1 in 5 seems to be great and 1 in 5 seems to be lousy.

what i saw, also the AI gets often sh.... system to deal with.

I just got the game so this may have been covered before. The earliest stumbling block I ran into is the lack of Titanium 70 and was not able to put level 2 armor upgrade on my ship and unable to build cruisers. I don't mind needing some exotic material for the higher end ships, planetary and system upgrades but not being able to build cruiser (which I assume is only a mid level ship) was a bit harsh.

Maybe the game ought to have some options for the player to choose between in terms of their starting setup. I've seen some Civ mods that enable this. They let the player pick options like 'Legendary Start' as a toggle that will prefer to put civilizations in the best possible locations. It'd be cool to have that here too.

I am imagining a series of drop-down options. You could choose whether the game favors the players, the AI, or neither when assigning starts. You could choose whether the game prefers awesome starts, rotten starts, or average starts. You could choose whether it attempts balancing at all. Finally, you could choose whether it tries to space players evenly or not.

Of course, the more specific you are, the more likely the placement algorithm is going to sputter along for five minutes before placing you, and the less likely you are to actually get something meeting all the criteria. I've seen that in Civ mods too. So this is maybe not the best idea, though I still think it's a decent one.

Yeah I've noticed this too. Starting a game with one or two planets in your starting system is always a difficult game, and usually I just restart.

I never had problems. 8/10 I got a spawn that was adequate.

I believe I read that spawn inconsistencies were on watch for the development team. Nobody wants to restart 3 or 4 times looking for a good spawn.

I searched around but I couldn't find a thread for it, so I'm starting a new one.

It may not sound like a big problem but imho it's huge.

The starting Position has a huge impact on the rest of your game so this should be balanced and maybe tied to the difficulty somehow. (Like having some sort of points available for your starting location and every planet, every resource, every nearby star system deducts a certain number of those points but with a minimum number of planets in the starting system according to difficulty and galaxy setting).

It's just frustrating to start a game where there is only 1 planet besides my homeworld in my starting system that I can't even colonize in a decent number of turns because its an asteroid belt or a gas giant or sth. and my colony ships needs about 2 and a half turns to reach the nearest system.

Most certainly having a specialized growth center can be profitable.

And colonizating from another star system planet isn't very good, you lose one people instead of adding new ones with colonization ships. It allows you to evolve faster.

That's why your first star system isn't very important, the most important it's extending your empire quickly.

Actually I hardly EVER build a colony ship for colonizing a planet in a star system that's already taken over. I do this exclusively in the system screen.
