[Discussion] It doesn't make sense that you can hire heroes from other races

Well in some of the bios of the heroes they were expelled from their race ( Craver general or something that wanted peace and not war ) so I guess they go on to work for other empires.. but as said before it's cosmetic issue, No bonuses from any of the races. Simple fix though, just duplicate every hero into every race give a quick little bio and viola!

Some heros were expelled, some left for glory and booze, but overall even playing as the UE states your just a cooperate hore, not actually the emperor.

From reading some profiles of the Heroes, I'm under the impression the "academy" is some sort of mercenary organization. Heroes sign up for it and they can be hired by people who need their services. Lorewise, all the races are established and know one another, it's only a gameplay mechanic that it acts like your race has just started exploring the galaxy for the first time - hence the game events saying this is your 'first contact' and not being alone in the galaxy, etc. etc.

I imagine ES is supposed to be a bit like Sins, in that the lore sets the framework, but gameplay mechanics are built around you just starting out, not playing as part of a large, established empire/race.

I like the idea of having heroes of your own race at the start too, But I actually had an interesting first game, where as the Pilgrims I had Sophon heroes available at the start, which made sense to me since in the lore the Sophons helped the Pilgrims out.

One of the reasons I like this game so much is the narrative it casts, I think if there is a hero from a different race there should at least be a narrative message/mechanic as to why he has come into your midst- maybe all aliens "second class citizens" are subjected to Dust treatment at the academy. Maybe the Dust brought the hero there quasi-magically.

I think one of the barriers to doing this may be that there are not very many heroes? Maybe one solution would be to make your own homegrown hero at the beginning of the game?

I agree that you shouldn't be able to hire heroes from alien races. You should be able to do that only if you are allied with their alien race or for single heroes which is justified by their background. Cravers shouldn't be able to recruit in any case heroes from different races.

Pilgrims able to recruit Sophons heroes is also a neat idea.

I think this is closer to the truth. If you read the descriptions of some of the heroes you will realize that they don't necessarily come strait from that factions home-world with their peoples interests in mind. For instance, there is a Horatio hero whose description says he was banished and now works for hire.

I think we are all missing the bigger issue... If i was head of an human intergalatic civ i would make it a point to wipe out any alien i met and declare all of the heavens in the name of humanity.. thats just my favorite fiction and how i would like to play the game... i was also led to believe that we would b able to burn worlds (i was really excited about this, n devs said they would add it, and we voted on it), and have an auto explore for scouts (granted that would b of limited use, still we voted on it), so in the end, would it be that hard to make a few heros unique to each race? 3 (admin+ random) literally thats it....every other race has a spy or a general type... ide even say that u get the chance to pick between 10 heros every 50 turns or wutever... i dont wanna rant, but i am....i jus really wanted to parade around the galaxy as the empire of humanity, burning xenos worlds and colonizing the stars... with great human heros and the whole thing will b a species victory for all of us

In terms of burning worlds, you can terriform planets into lava planets or barren wastelands, thats pretty close, though lava planets do make good factories-slave planets anyone?

And the ability to raise planets (Burn the surface) is upcoming.

I really don't want to disappoint you guys... but I do it anyway

I have been working with heroes now "couple" days (along with everything else but hey, thats me smiley: wink

first of all, what you see in screen (without skills) is:
<br/><br/> <Description>%Hero21Description</Description> <br/><br/> <Icon Small="Gui/DynamicBitmaps/HeroPortraits/hisshoHero03Small" Large="Gui/DynamicBitmaps/HeroPortraits/hisshoHero03Large" Wide="Gui/DynamicBitmaps/HeroPortraits/hisshoHero03Wide"/> <br/><br/>

1

Corporate;Adventurer

Labor=0;Wit=4;Melee=3;Offense=1;Defense=7
and what you see in academy is:
3

50

2

20

60

1
Basically game randomizes out of all those heroes 3 heroes at start to DeparmentofEducation (what academy? I like Department of Education more :P)...

although it is possible to set image of all heroes to similar and thus make what you want it's not possible to bybass that rule that:

"heroes going to academy is randomized out of 61 different heroes".

Or well atleast I haven't been able with that. Developers probably could but this should be mod and not design feature (and even then it wouldn't be that important feature).

My suggestion was just to tweak the balances of probabilities of getting a hero.

Say a much better chance to get a hero of your race. A slightly increased chance to get one of the same diplomatic alignment. No change for neutral (unless you are neutral). A slightly decreased chance to get a hero of the opposite alignment.

Hopefully that would be able to keep most people happy, and reflect an increased likelihood that heroes would gravitate to societies they would feel comfortable with.

I still have to argue that heroes don't necessarily have to be loyal to their race. If they decide that they are better than the rest of their race or they simply want power/glory enough I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to seek out your empire and work against their own kind.

It makes less sense for some though. Having to hire a Craver hero as Sophons was absolutely baffling to me.

It's an opinion, although I think that when one expels his heroes it is logical for them to go on others.

It's been discussed here before. Many people agree with you, to be sure. I for one. But as you meet other races, their candidates should appear available too, IMO. In any event, right now it is mostly a cosmetic issue, since there are no pros and cons to the hero's race affiliation anyway. If that changes in the gold release, then we'll see how it is implemented. I think the developers are reading these posts and taking notes.

I would agree that at the start of the game you should only have "own race" heroes available to you, but some heroes have good reason to be elsewhere. For example a bio for one of the The Cravers' heroes was that he was contaminated by Dust, causing him to outgrow his Hive and think far more broadly than The Cravers around him. You can see exactly why a sentient Craver would much rather be around other sentient beings than around hive bound creatures that do not strictly think for themselves.

As for other races you can think of many reasons, greed being primary, who can't resist a huge stack of credits! (errr sack of Dust?) smiley: smile

It is totally okay with me that heroes can be mixed, though there could be some sort of negative effects if you use hero from another race.

It used to work in HOMM.

It doesn't make sense that Horatio accepts other races when it clearly states that his purpose is to fill the galaxy with "perfect, beautiful" copies of himself.

I agree. You can recruit people from other races that you haven't met, or even races that aren't even part of the session, which is weird. It would make more sense if those races are unlock as you meet them.

You'd think that, but then again heroes are an adventurous breed and could easily be out exploring when they come across your empire.

Also as to Horatio he has the ability to clone heroes and I suspect he sneaks a bit of his own DNA in there with every new clone...
