You'd think that, but then again heroes are an adventurous breed and could easily be out exploring when they come across your empire.

Also as to Horatio he has the ability to clone heroes and I suspect he sneaks a bit of his own DNA in there with every new clone...

Well.. I'm speechless.

That sounds just a bit far-fetched.

OK how about this.

1. To start with you can't recruit heroes of another race until you research some technology, (I am not sure which one, I think there is some sort of "Xeno Diplomacy" tech that mentions heroes)

2. You cannot recruit heroes of a race that you haven't met yet. And having better relations to an empire of a particular race will increase the odds of having a hero of that race come up for recruitment.

These has been a few post about this issue.I hope it is moddable because it ruins the theme in my view.I do not think dust would make you a race traitor either.

I really like both of those ideas, fits well into game mechanics and background/realism!

I still have to argue that heroes don't necessarily have to be loyal to their race. If they decide that they are better than the rest of their race or they simply want power/glory enough I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to seek out your empire and work against their own kind.

This sounds like a good compromise. It was always weird when the first batch of heroes you got were all not from you're race. How did they get to your planet lol. Research should be called something like refugee status elevation imo

I was under the impression that each race would have its own heroes that it could recruit, and not that every faction could hire every hero. It just doesn't feel realistic or logical to me that every faction can recruit every hero.

I mean why should a hero join a faction that is at war with its own race for example? And why would a warlike race like the Cravers want humans in control of its armies and planets?

It feels immersion braking for me.

I suggest that each faction can only hire heroes from its own race.

Thoughts?

It makes less sense for some though. Having to hire a Craver hero as Sophons was absolutely baffling to me.

I can agree that in principle most other races' heroes should not be instantly available, but some, like a specific Craver hero have bios that explain why they are unique. And of course story wise the Sophons would love to see an advanced Craver up close smiley: smile Though that isn't really the point.

Still doesn't explain why other factions would actually WANT to hire them. Why would the Cravers hire a human for example? Why would the hive mind even want them? Its not just about whether the heroes them self's want to join other races, but why other races would want to recruit them.

Well from my understanding of the background lore. These heroes are special in there way of manipulating dust and using dust which makes them highly valuable. Every race wants to exploit dust really and so having a bunch of people/aliens/asbos with the ability to use dust in the ways that they do must be very appealing.

Heroes... they're wandering mercenaries. People fight against other people all the time, so why shouldn't members of other species?

For the same reason the japanese American population was put in internment camps in WW2. It's very hard to get over doubting their loyalties.

It makes sense for all the races! EXCEPT CRAVERS! Who from what I've read would turn ANY foreign hero's into sundays steak sandwich.

I feel like this post is developing lots of fantastical back story for a game to describe a dissociation.

I think it can make sense as the heroes are supposed to be dust enhanced and independent minded (in many of their bios), but I think you should have the option to be xenophobic and only have heroes of your race. See my post proposing changes to the hero system /#/endless-space/forum/29-archives/thread/13301-hero-recruitment-system

Edit: I agree with the sentiment toward the Cravers, most of them don't even have independent thought from some of the bios. Perhaps they could have the penalty of only being able to choose heroes of their race (again see my post, 2nd comment)

I find this immersion breaking too. Design goal should be to make different factions feel different. And faction-specific heroes would count towards this goal.

I don't see any reason why heroes should be mixed.

The game has independent pools for players from what I can gather.

Why not have one huge shared pool where each faction has a choice of three of their own heroes first and if the players expel any heroes then they can pop up for another empire in the next round of recruitment?

The hero can be looking for asylum because they've been outcast by their own. There can also be the need for empires meeting so the hero can become available but I don't think that's necessary.

Other than picture and name, the heroes are all the same collection of stats. There is no difference between a craver hero and a sophon hero. One way to make the factions more different would be to have a dedicated lineup of heroes rather than be randomly drawn from a pool. If you play Hissho for example, you have a few outstanding pilots and commanders, but lacklustre corporate or administrators. To get a good planetary governor, you would need to hire a non-hissho hero mercenary.
