I like this idea, too. As far as I know, there is no existing 4x game that reacts on first contact other than notifying the player. Implementing this would give ES another unique feature. That'd be great!

Yeah more dynamic events would be cool. Personally i would like to see the option to make some choices on some events. Example: Found and old Endless Temple have the choice to exploit it for a science boost but cause riots from a religious cult or leave it at peace and get an approval bonus.

See that quote implies an epic arse-kicking is soon to follow lol

That's a good point. What is first contact to an established, dozen system empire who has met 5 other species already? With that being said, if such a species were xenophobic... meeting yet another species could be the impetus for a riot or calls for a holy war against the evil alien vermin. That latest first contact could just be the straw that broke the camel's back, as it were. The latter could be a special event that causes the relationship between such a species and others to steeply decline for X number of turns, or until an enemy player is eliminated.

Cool Idea! I agree that first contact would probably be one of the defining moments in a civilization's history and characterize the following years' if not decades' of development. Just think of the different types of races one might encounter and the consequences this would have. In Star Trek the Vulcans initiated contact when the first ftl drive was tested and a technological renaissance set in, with the Vulcan's as humanity's mentors. (Read: +Tech, +Peace, +Colonization) Just imagine, what would have happened if it hadn't been a Vulcan science vessel passing by but a Romulan bird of prey (galactical proximity grossly ignored). Humanity's immediate future would have looked very different and probably resulted in a more militaristic development. (+War, +Military, +Espionage). In gameplay terms, first contact could have the effect of enabling certain research options, as well.

I really like this idea. Especially if like has been said it has different affects based around who the first contact is with smiley: biggrin

I like the idea of a more profound effect on contacting a new alien race also, this is never really explored in most games.

I like the ideas in the OP, I was thinking that perhaps the type of alien race you meet can make a huge difference to the moral and production of your race, such as meeting a benevolent humanoid race that may share some aspects with you (being humanoid yourself) would have more positive effects than meeting an insectoid type race who is extremely alien to your culture in all aspects socially and technologically, so rather than just being random, the effects of meeting a culture would depend on how they relate to your current race and some of the choices you have already made for your society.

Dynamic events, definitely +1 for this. If not only this idea (maybe reworked) but also more others are implemented, the life-spawn of Endless Space will probably be... endless. ^^

I'm glad this seems to be a popular idea. I can't see it being overly difficult to code either. I mean, Random Events are already going to be ingame, just create a new catagory of these events and hav a script that runs of the the events when the new race / advanced race is discovered.

Sounds good. But making a huge fleet and prepping yourself for meeting an possible hostile race and then loosing half your armada will sting!

So for your first alien contact you'd have 1 of the following

5% chance of civil war, 1/2 you fleet break away to become Militant / pacifist

5% of riots, costing economy X amount

5% chance of unified people, producung X production points

5% change of refocused research, gaining x research points

5% of noting at all, we knew they were out there

.....

Et cetra, up to 100%

This would make 1st contact feel momentus, as I'm sure it will be.

Aslo, There could be a slightly smaller chance of this when we come across other races, if they're much more powerful / advanced than us.

What do you guys think?

I agree with you. Your idea would add a lot of "realism" to the game. In fact, I think the % could be different depending on your race, so the ones you described are good (I think) for the Unified Empire, but Sophons, etc. could have different effects (due to a different culture). Anyway, a great idea and a nice gameplay factor that could be added to Endless Space.

This is a good idea. Dynamic events of this sort would add some extra nuance to encountering new races. Some racial perks such as "xenophobic" or "loves everyone, yay" or whatever would factor in to those events rather well.

I'd love if a random event (Althout maybe that's wrong, maybe random effect is better) to be caused by first contact with the first alien race.

One of the things that really bothered me about Gal Civ II was that when you met your first race (who was usually hostile) it had no real effect on my empire. Just a window with "Oh, hey Human. Whuzzup. Oh, BTW, I'm gonna kick your ass soon. Laters" does not feel very epic. And I alway imagine that WHEN we find Alien life, it's going to have a very pronounced effect on our society.

I would like to see events where your first contact goes from good to bad, influencing your starting diplomatic stance (influenced by race traits).

Sounds like a great Idea I'd also like to see hero's play a part in this just as an example lets say a loyalty perk that has a chance to reduce the number of ships that break away from your fleet to become Militant / pacifist
