I'm not sure what isn't in the game that's the difference between Coop and not Coop. You can forge alliances, you are at no point forced to attack your teammates and if any of your defined human team wins, it just isn't displayed as one score but as two. Still, you've won as per your definition.

The only thing that's not in there or easily manageable to "do yourself", so to say, is to get an AI player to do what you want.

1) There is no option for Allied Victory

My TEAM can't win. Sure we can arbitrally say "We win! Hurray!", but it's really not the same thing.

2) The AI will NOT form a Team

When people set out to play a "Co-op game" in Endless Space it turns into a "2v1v1" or "3v1v1v1" instead of a "2v2" or "3v3" because the AI will not work together.

These are important distinctions, and ones that have been articulated much better earlier in this thread. I think the points raised by the previous posters here are quite clear. You can play together with another player(s), but it is NOT co-op.

I agree about the co-op and needing the option to set up teams.

It's a big distinction between the players knowing they are playing co-op and the AI knowing it is playing co-op. Please don't overlook this very important feature.

When I play this game, I feel like this is a major piece that is missing. I don't know why I can't set up teams ahead of time, I looked all over for the option, it never occurred to me that it just wasn't an option. This forum post was a big eye-opener for me. Clearly there are those among us that just want the option to set up teams if we want them.

They all said it better than me, but I cast my votes with them.

Will there be an option for:

  • Fixed alliances--good for cooperative multiplayer.
  • Always war/peace--combines well with the above, though this may cancel out certain faction penalties.

I think that it sounds like a good idea. This would ensure that if you play Co-op then your allies wouldn't accidentally (Or purposely) betray you.

I'm kind of getting the feeling that this whole games together thing is something they aren't taking very seriously.

I've got my 100 pts still, and another 500 somehow from pre-ordering it on steam, and this is the feature I and others wanted. And we get to vote on art.

Now the game is out and the feature still isn't there. At least they say they aren't done with patching and adding stuff, so that's given me hope.

As an experiment, add the feature, add the 'co-op' badge on steam, do a co-op press release and see what happens to sales (as per the article I linked to before). Thank us all later.

What's frustrating as a player is that this feature doesn't conflict with the game as it stands, nor with game vision. It's only an option for those of us who want it. There is no downside, that I can see, and significant player buy-in and support. What's the hang up? Too many other things to tackle first?

I played with a friend and we had to intentionally not trade tech and whatnot because it made it too easy. We quickly "won" our 2v1v1 match. Of course we didn't actually win, because the game was then going to force us to play against each other. So we threw our hands in the air and said "we win" and quit. A thoroughly unsatisfying experience. Wont do that again. We'll play Sins of a Solar Empire next time.

At least the devs seem to be working on modding. Maybe once modding is out someone can change the difficulty levels or add a special AI faction so that one AI can give multiple players a challenge. (Of course, you could argue that first we need to make one that gives one player a challenge, har.)

I'd +1 this (heck, I'd +1000 it if I could!) for all the reasons mentioned above. Coop is a big deal, and that means setting formal teams. An ad hoc approximation is an unsatisfying solution and those who say otherwise clearly don't understand the coop gamer mindset. That's not quite as important as understanding it's a significant part of the potential audience and accepting that fact. Being a developer who says, "We don't want to play the game this way so we won't do X," is something you just can't do unless you want to alienate fans and have people 'going back to playing X game instead.", to quote at least one of the other posts here.

Amplitude deserves credit for being so community focused and inclusive about the development of Endless Space. So why the reluctance to put coop out there as a design option, given the volume this topic is making?

Just wondering what the thinking behind it is.

(And for full disclosure, I should add that my wife - wow, I'm married now... sorry, still sinking in; only happened two weeks ago - won't play Endless Space and wants to stick with Civ IV specifically because we can't win jointly against a pre-defined enemy alliance.)

This is a fundamental essential of multiplayer cooperative play.

I definitely second this suggestion.

Whilst the AI is unable to reasonably undergo such notions , diplomacy an advanced agreements should definitely come into play during multiplayer games.

Thanks Flipstar, I agree that this is a very important feature to provide long term re-playability in multiplayer. If a Dev reads this, could you please comment on if Co-Op is on the cards?

I'm just glad to know that I'm not the only person who isn't into pure PvP, and actually wants co-op impletmented (not ad-hoc which never happens with random online games).

+1 for the thread to keep it alive. And here's to somehow making the game a bit more friendlier for set teams and non PvP multiplayer games.

+1 for co-op and setting up teams in MP - currently trying on endless but still not difficult enough!

Thanks for posting rcuhljr, I agree fixed dilo status and shared victory conditions would be a reall winner.

It is indeed a major feature which would be a selling point for a few of my friends.

We love playing all kind of games altogether, and have slowly switched over time from competitive multiplayer to cooperative multiplayer whenever possible, and there's no turning back !

I already play pseudo-coop games with a friend but the IAs are no match so far because, as it has been stated already, IAs play on their own and against each others as well as against us.
