Multiplayer etiquette, things to consider

Speaking as the guy who always lose multiplayer matches because I can't keep up with early-game expansion and warfare I have to say, making etiquette rules telling people not to attack peaceful players, or attack early, is really silly. It's a competitive game, if you want to play peaceful, research the diplomacy techs and try to cut a deal with whoever is attacking you. If you don't want to be attacked early, build yourself a defense.

Pulling your punches just because "its not nice" is patronising and shouldn't really be done and people who expect it to be done seem, to me, to be immature and full of some strange feeling of entitlement.

I totally agree on the "don't end turn when players log in and take over an AI/reconnect", but if you want to play with kid gloves on, play a private match.

If you put a server rule saying "You musn't attack the peaceful, atleast until turn 20 or you'll get no dinner!" the only thing that will happen is that the peaceful player will be devoured very quickly. Really you could just make a huge or large galaxy to slow down the early game

You can just make a server rule to not rush before turn 30 or Amplitude could put that into the MP options.

If you want to be a nice peaceful player, go play farmville. This is a strategy game, unless you can supply me with something useful then I will invade you and kill you.

Seriously what game do you think your playing? I understand all our other etiquette points but not the "Don't attack me I'm peaceful", "Wait until at least turn 20 so that i have a defense force before you attack me" and "don't double team someone because that's not fair!"

And no matter what there will be fighting, you can't take it out of the game with a victory condition. But seriously.. Go play farmville or against 1 newbie AI if you want to have fun building stuff without getting shot.

Double teaming someone early is not fair, if you wanted to work together to take folks out, then just make it a private game. Then again I suppose even strategy games have griefers. As for attacking before turn 20, if that is the kind of game you want you should specify it up front. But as mentioned already some races are built around conquest. If you do not want that sort of play style - then remove that as a victory condition and make it known in my opinion. But it is not a generally accepted rule of etiquette or otherwise to not attack someone in a multiplayer game in my opinion.

In fact against a human opponant the less time they have to get going or set, the better it just makes it harder later on.

Yes I attack all the time early, heck on my last game i was attacking turn 4 I think. Of course he was at my system but I had a fleet at his system turn 9 I think.

Do people really attack by turn 20 in your multiplayer games?

Haven't seen that before tbh. On double teaming early on I agree, that's kind of a d*** move.

what nycidian said.

when I play cravers core faction if you do not attack you die period end of story I would attack turn 2 if I could. Their science depends on attacking. If you look at a roleplay aspect of the cravers they could care less if you are a warmonger or peaceful they just know you are well yummy.

The servers are lousy sometimes and dump players.

I myself keep forgetting that a player who connects after a game starts (whether they are taking over what had been an AI player from the start, or reconnecting) cannot see anything, not even chat messages, until after the current turn ends.

A player who is reconnecting after a few turns of the AI having taken them over, or taking over a start-until-then AI will need time to fix what the AI has been doing, so I think its good etiquette to hold off on clicking "End Turn" the first turn after they reconnect to get their bearings, fix production on planets, sort through fleets and ship designs, etc.

Agree

It shouldn't need to be said, but bullying on a peaceful player is lousy, doubly so with early game cheeze (attacking before turn 20 even). This message is preaching to the choir for some, and of course lost on the lamers who do it, but still.

Um... No, just utterly and completely no.

This is a strategy game, that includes war. Attacking a "peaceful player" is part of the game, don't like it, then either punish them by beating them or ally with others.

As for "attacking before turn 20 even" again this is a viable strategy, perhaps learn and get better at defending.
