Humankind Closed Beta available June 13th to June 21st

After every OpenDev so far, we have seen comments from many players asking us to let them keep playing, or at least host another OpenDev, and Victor was no exception. In fact, after the recent glimpse of the Industrial era in articles and videos, the cries may have been louder than ever before. Luckily, there’s a Closed Beta, and it’s bigger than any OpenDev before!

From June 13th at 14:30 PT / 23:30 CEST to June 21st at 14:30 PT / 23:30 CEST, play up to 200 turns of Humankind (PC and English language only), and for the first time ever try the industrial era and the new opportunities it brings. Exploit coal and oil to push your economy to new heights of productivity. Build railways to cheaply and quickly move goods and troops. Fight the biggest battles yet, support them with long range artillery bombardment, and take to the skies to keep an eye on your enemies! And of course, be sure to fill out the survey and let us know what you think.

How do you get your hands on the Closed Beta?

    • If you have played the Victor OpenDev, the Closed Beta should already be in your Steam library.

    • If you have pre-purchased on Steam, go to your profile page to link your Steam account, then go to your rewards page and redeem the Closed Beta access at the top.

    • If you have pre-purchased on Epic Games Store, the Closed Beta should be in your library

    • You can also earn access through Twitch-drops on participating channels, but make sure your Games2Gether account is linked to both Steam and Twitch (check your account settings to be sure)

    • If you are having any problems, please check the troubleshooting thread first.

Speaking of Twitch: Drops for the special streamer avatars are back as well, so you will have another chance to unlock them before release (though there will still be chances after release, and these avatars will be usable in the release version of the game as well). This time around, some of these avatars will even already have their own voice acting, so if you are a fan of any of these streamers, be sure to give playing against their avatar a try. They're even joined by a new face, Frankie Ward, cohost of the PC Gaming Show!

If you have any trouble getting access to the Closed Beta, please check the Troubleshooting thread, and while we are as eager to hear your feedback as you are to give it, please take a moment to read the Welcome Thread first.

Have fun!

Maybe remove the 200 turn limits will be great, given that most of the industrial tech is not yet developed within 200 turns. It will be nice if we can enjoy those industrial features that you have already designed.

Hello,
After finishing the open beta for a second time, the game did not prompt a survey again, so I thought I can share a few things here.

First, about combat AI. If the AI has a unit that can move after attacking, like the Hunnic horde, it just keeps moving back and forth between two tiles for ages, it really is annoying. It would be nice if we can fast forward AI actions, or AI just picks a spot and stays there, instead of using all of its movement points just for the sake of using them.

Second, about technology. I'm still unsure if it's my fault or it's inherent with the game, but tech seems too slow. I played 2 full 200 turn campaigns, and in one of them I picked 2 scientific cultures, but by the end of it I was in the industrial era, but my tech was in the medieval era. Maybe it's the opposite, maybe the eras move past so quickly, considering it was the 13th century. It's weird to be in the industrial era in 1250CE. So tech was too slow, I haven't had any chance to use the new units. As I said, it might be my fault, maybe I should focus on tech more.

Maybe there should be more incentive to stay in an era, or less punishment for not evolving. Or maybe moving up should be increasingly more difficult. But it seems that AI moves to the next era as soon as possible, and that is really punishing for the player, the chance of not getting the culture you want is too high.

Naval gameplay was kinda lacking. I did not see any reason for building more than 1 naval unit to explore, but that's it.

Other than these points, everything seems marvelous. This might be the best 4x game I've ever played. Everything is intuitive, and mechanics like territories, eras, and fame were so fresh and fun to play with. Keep up the good work, and here's to a glorious launch in August!

looks like you can't get this beta access from Twitch drops, just the useless avatars

edit: Twitch access works, with massive delay (over 1h from claiming drop)

I must be doing something wrong. Try the Industrial Era? In 200 turns I can barely, and rarely, scrape into Early Modern. On the very easy setting!

I bought the game because I am a huge Civ 6 fan and saw that Humankind was set to be released on the Mac as well as Windows.  Disappointed to find the betas have all be Windows only.  Will the mac version be released on the same day as windows?

I can't see the Closed Beta in rewards, even though I do have a steam account linked and the game prepurchased. Bump

When will we have the chance to test an Open Beta version? I know I'm impatient :) Thank you

Hi Guys, Thankyou so much for hosting another open Dev opportunity! I missed my chance to participate in the last one thanks to Uni studies!

Bit of feed back for this time round regarding the AI on the higher level difficulties.

The sliding scale of difficulty races from super easy to nay-impossible by the time you reach "Nation" Difficulty.
I've found the AI Armies are able to spawn new units whilst in fog of war, able to disappear for a turn only to come back at me with a full stack of units against my lonely scout.
I feel this is inconsistent with the challenge of beating the AI when they can simply brute force you into oblivion. Benefits to their cities, science, economy, unit strength/advantages in battle all seem fair. but spawning units from ether is a bit much.

As far as game progression goes, i'm fairly happy with it, aside from this.
Scientific progress seems to fall behind era progress, likewise city development seems to lag behind the science. i've often found myself entering a new era, 3-4 techs away from my unique unit becoming available and some 30+ Turns until i can reach that tech. could be because the open dev is 200 turn limited but i would hope Era's. Tech and Development evolve along a similar scale.

Overall i think you guys have done a brilliant job! graphics, gameplay, combat, all beautifully done!  i can't wait to see more of this!

Hey All! Super excited to play... Maybe. :D I've managed to secure a Twitch Drop for the Closed Beta (thanks Shenryyr!), but when I claimed it on Twitch... Nothing happened. I've been checking my Steam account (I even refreshed it via the account management area), and both Twitch and Games2Gether confirm that all three accounts (Steam, G2G, Twitch) are interlinked... But there's still no beta available in my Steam library as suggested by this link: https://www.games2gether.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/drops/keys

Am I missing something here? Did I perhaps accept the Drop incorrectly somehow?

Regardless, looking forward to Aug 17 when I can play the final version!!

I currently share the same issue, unfortunately. I've claimed the Closed Beta drop on Twitch - but I am not sure how to access the Closed Beta. I read somewhere that you would be sent an e-mail with a redeemable code? However, I've yet to receive such e-mail, sadly.

From discord "Why Closed Beta (& Not OpenDev)?

We're not at a stage anymore where we feel we may need to completely redo systems or add more systems. (And we would probably be too close to release to do so anyway)"

Thanks!

Missed the last one and it was very saddening. Glad I decided to check in and see that it's going on again!

Can't wait to play :)
