HUMANKIND - Progress Report + Mac Version Postponed

Hey everyone,

It’s hard to believe that after 4 years of development and 25 years of dreaming, we’re just 2 weeks away from the release of HUMANKIND! It’s been an amazing journey with all of you: both launching our OpenDev program for the first time and working with our VIP community members behind-the-scenes. We hope you’ve felt involved in this journey the whole way through and that you’ll be as proud as we are of the result.

In the meantime, though, we wanted to give a progress report on what we’ve been working on these past weeks since the Closed Beta, as well as to announce the news that the Mac version of the game will be postponed a few weeks (more detail on that further down).

What we’ve been working on:

  • Balancing and pacing – We got lots of great feedback from the Closed Beta on how we could improve the games balancing and have been testing and implementing many changes since then
    • Rebalanced research cost and era star thresholds to bring both in line with the desired game duration
    • Rebalancing of many cultures
    • New Religion tenets with more conditional effects instead of always desirable blanket bonuses
    • Changes to some Civics and Ideologies to allow engaging with the system without losing the main source of stability
    • Added new unit abilities to offer a different combat experience for gunpowder warfare
  • New system: Pollution – We’ve added a pollution system to the game which begins towards the end of Era 5
  • Diplomacy – This was another of the big areas we wanted to tackle following the Closed Beta. We've improved and added more depth, including new treaties and clearer UI.
  • Quality of life improvements – Things like better descriptions of the Civics and their effects, plus the addition of video tutorials to help new players. There is also now a fixed map for the two “Tutorial” options when you first start the game.
  • AI – We’ve improved the way AI deals with the economies and armies' missions. Levels of difficulty have also been balanced.

Mac version postponed a Few Weeks

We’d also like to let you all know that the Mac version will be postponed about one month. We are still having some issues with certain configurations, as well as with multiplayer.

This was a difficult decision for us, but we really wanted to take the time and make sure that the PC version was as good as possible, but also ensure that we had the necessary time to give the Mac version all the love that it is equally deserving of!

We do apologize and thank you for your patience and continued support.

We can’t wait for August 17th!

Great! Good job!

A new pollution system + Changes in diplomacy. Can we dream with agreements to reduce carbon emissions? Or... Are you guys just talking about making the diplomacy screen more intuitive (especially in terms of options and experience) and adding a pollution system that only affects the game's environment? I can't wait to seeing how you guys worked on it!

In the introductory videos of the game (on YT) you mentioned that fame would be the only victory condition for the game. The increase and improvement in AI seems to be fundamental for the Endgame (which unfortunately we weren't able to observe during the betas) for it to be fun and challenging  at the same time. Can we expect new victory conditions? Or endgame special missions/events? I'm really worried about the snowball effect!!

Sad to see the delay, but in the end I'd much rather have a well working game, so it's all good to me.

Talking about multiplayer, is the Stadia crossplay with other platforms guaranteed? It says it's available on the product page on Stadia, but that was also true for Outriders on Stadia, and to day that game doesn't have crossplay at all.

Probably not, seeing as the release date is set within 2 weeks and there has already been a closed beta last month.

Gosh, so excited! Only 10 more days, and it even lines up with my off days so I'll be able to just play all day on release. I am curious if there will be some kind of pre-load ahead of the release date, tho. That way I could I totally maximize my time right of the bat lol

When I play video games, I look forward to getting entertained and to escape to a fictional world, away from real life problems. However, I can very much assume the reason why you introduced the pollution system (and that reason is obviously connected to politics). Are you serious with this? If I someday purchase Humankind, this specific feature will be the bitter aftertaste of it all because I want to be entertained when playing and not be haunted by real life politics! These two things shouldn't be combined, which is better for a company's reputation. I love how SEGA has once stayed out of this topic but with the current situation overall, the aftertaste is even getting worse with time...

(Now, please don't get me wrong, I'm questioning the method/feature in general here and NOT the opinion itself. Well, I guess my comment will cause a huge shitstorm towards me anyway. But I hope you'll aggree with me that less people will get offended the less (socio-)political opinions are delivered with a product in general.)

I'd just like ask, but Steam is now showing a release date of Aug 18th for me.  Did something happen to delay the launch a day or is Steam just messing with me?

Are you planning on adding some QoL upgrades to Event effect descriptions? I mean, we have events like "+5 Religion on 5 cities vs +5% Religion on 5 cities" (or something similar) and it'd be nice to be able to look up the difference easily.

Is it possible to release the Mac OS version now, without multiplayer or are the issues wider than that @SpaceTroll ?

We (mac users) will at least be able to get used to the game for when multiplayer is available and provide useful feedback.

Thanks, I know it is hard work and we appreciate your efforts to get it working.  Anything we can do to help let us know.
