First Ever Humankind Event: Día de los Muertos

We've got a surprise for you today: We're celebrating (though a bit late) the Día de los Muertos with Humankind's first ever in-game event, from now until November 30th!

 


The Día de los Muertos Events

These events will present you with various challenges to complete in your games, across multiple chapters unlocking over the course of the event. Not only will this give you new and perhaps unusual goals to pursue in your games, but you can even unlock unique customization options, ranging from symbols and frames to complete avatars! We want to host many such events in the future, but for the first one this November, we want to highlight the Dia de los Muertos, so the challenges in this first event are themed around religion, celebration, and mesoamerican cultures. For example, the first chapter includes the following challenges:

  • Festival: As Mexico, complete 20 Festival Public Ceremonies.
  • Distrito Federal: Have a city with at least 300 population.
  • World Faith: Be the religious leader of every Empire in a game.

You can check your progress on these challenges and redeem your rewards in game if you are connected to your Games2Gether account from the Community screen. This particular event will have two chapters, with the second unlocking in addition to the first on November 16th. For each chapter you complete, you will earn some empire emblem customization options. If you complete both chapters, that's three symbols and frames each, and the Catrina avatar on top of it!


So, a belated feliz día de los muertos to everybody, and we hope you will enjoy these challenges and rewards.



The Fabius Maximus Update

Alongside this event, we are also releasing the Fabius Maximus Update. We've talked about the contents of this Update before, but here's a quick summary of what it contains:

  • You can set opponents in the new game lobby to pick a random avatar from your collection
  • You can customize the colors used for empires and subtitles (e.g. diplomacy dialog or the narrator)
  • You can choose the abundance of strategic and luxury resources when creaing a new game
  • Several cultures have been rebalanced
  • Expansionist era stars are now easier to achieve in the early game on large maps
  • The expansionist ability is now free and can be used on enemies at war
  • Food gains and mammoth strength in the neolithic have been adjusted to slow down early growth
  • Population food consumption and district costs have been increase to slow down excessive growth
  • Several Civics have received new effects
  • Added varied unit art to improve immersion
  • And of course, lots of bugfixes


If you want to know more, you can find the complete patch notes in the release notes thread. Additionally, we are releasing a beta version of the modding tools, which you can learn about in the modding basics blog.


There are also some other improvements we've been working on, but that we could not finish for this patch. We're working on more granular customization of the end conditions, to let you decide exactly how your game may end, as well as unit balance, to better align the cost of units with their power. These improvements will arrive in the next patch around the middle of November.

Yeah I'm not managing the 300 pop one either, I don't have the influence to link up big cities, pollution wrecking everything this late in the game. I'm guessing the devs must have some cheesy strat in mind for doing it. Best I can manage without going an extra 400 turns in is just over 200.

For anyone wondering, you can still fulfil the challenges if you continue a game past the end. Be careful not to get into the painful state I'm in now where this run is not going to achieve the target until turn 1000. Such a time sink.

My method of getting the religion unlock was much like SpikedWallMan's above, except without war. I set up the usual cheese map (single opponent, tiny world, blitz speed, hamlet difficulty), developed a religion to a decent point, took the religious intolerance civic, and demanded the opponent's conversion as a diplomatic grievance. The opponent agreed.


Before doing so, I had moved my capital to a fresh city right at their doorstep and spammed some holy infrastructure (Teuton district, holy site) but I'm not sure that even mattered. My religion had no foothold in their capital, only in the buffer districts.

I unlocked it with the lowest difficulty setting.  Though I had to try a few times before it finally unlocked.  It helps if you can blitz your opponent ASAP and capture their cities before they have a chance to even build Holy Sites.

Hi everyone.

My progress on Festival celebration stuck on on 18/20. I read that I'm not the one with this issue.

I receive message that 'reward claimed' but I receive only 2 of 3 frames and cannot push progress on Festival celebration. Could you say if I start new game I need to complete all challenges or only this one and it will go further?

That one I didn't really understand.  Once I reached 300 population, my religion was the dominant one across all empires, but the challenge didn't unlock for some reason.  So what I did was start a new Blitz game against 1 AI opponent, rushed Militarist cultures, maximized Faith as much as possible, and kept going to war with my opponent to prevent them from growing their empire and gaining Faith.  The challenge eventually unlocked after about 50 turns.


(I'll point out once again how much of a grind these challenges are - at least the Endless Day events usually give us a real sidequest that can be completed in less than an hour.)

Edit : it works ! so I complete the festival and the 300 pop. and now it left the religion.. do you have any idea ? :)

I did it by building lots of Farmers Quarters and then building adjacent Commons Quarters to offset the regional instability caused by the Farmers Quarters.  Took forever.

thanks !

Just connect the cities after having enough pop. (you don't need to get just agrarians, some engineering is required to fast build the farmer quarters.)

Please fix the achievements. I unlocked 2 yesterday (just missed the 300 pops one by 13 pops...) and they are back at an unlocked stage, this is very problematic. I don't want to redo the same game (going full faith and food and Mexico's festivals), this would be very boring, even more if I'm not sure that the unlocked achievements won't again disappear on the morrow.

ffs I thought we just had to connect steam to g2g, but you actually have to connect the game, in-game, to g2g, through the community tab in-game. spent like 8 hours trying to get this event fulfilled. how is it possible that I can explain how to get the event better than amplitude through this barely thought out post lol.

Had the same problem... I'm stuck at 16 but it says completed... I've unlocked 2 frames and the candle icon... Is it the first phase reward?

On other hand, does anyone else encounter this state of events? I can only do 10/20 festivals, I did do all 20 but the condition triggered early but left it stuck at 10, now I am stuck with event notification.

You would think a studio as "open" as Amplitude would at least give us some kind of feedback on this...


Edit : I stand corrected. There's just been an announcement on Steam. Still, a word or two here from a dev would have been nice.
