First Ever Humankind Event: Día de los Muertos

We've got a surprise for you today: We're celebrating (though a bit late) the Día de los Muertos with Humankind's first ever in-game event, from now until November 30th!

The Día de los Muertos Events

These events will present you with various challenges to complete in your games, across multiple chapters unlocking over the course of the event. Not only will this give you new and perhaps unusual goals to pursue in your games, but you can even unlock unique customization options, ranging from symbols and frames to complete avatars! We want to host many such events in the future, but for the first one this November, we want to highlight the Dia de los Muertos, so the challenges in this first event are themed around religion, celebration, and mesoamerican cultures. For example, the first chapter includes the following challenges:

  • Festival: As Mexico, complete 20 Festival Public Ceremonies.
  • Distrito Federal: Have a city with at least 300 population.
  • World Faith: Be the religious leader of every Empire in a game.

You can check your progress on these challenges and redeem your rewards in game if you are connected to your Games2Gether account from the Community screen. This particular event will have two chapters, with the second unlocking in addition to the first on November 16th. For each chapter you complete, you will earn some empire emblem customization options. If you complete both chapters, that's three symbols and frames each, and the Catrina avatar on top of it!

So, a belated feliz día de los muertos to everybody, and we hope you will enjoy these challenges and rewards.

The Fabius Maximus Update

Alongside this event, we are also releasing the Fabius Maximus Update. We've talked about the contents of this Update before, but here's a quick summary of what it contains:

  • You can set opponents in the new game lobby to pick a random avatar from your collection
  • You can customize the colors used for empires and subtitles (e.g. diplomacy dialog or the narrator)
  • You can choose the abundance of strategic and luxury resources when creaing a new game
  • Several cultures have been rebalanced
  • Expansionist era stars are now easier to achieve in the early game on large maps
  • The expansionist ability is now free and can be used on enemies at war
  • Food gains and mammoth strength in the neolithic have been adjusted to slow down early growth
  • Population food consumption and district costs have been increase to slow down excessive growth
  • Several Civics have received new effects
  • Added varied unit art to improve immersion
  • And of course, lots of bugfixes

If you want to know more, you can find the complete patch notes in the release notes thread. Additionally, we are releasing a beta version of the modding tools, which you can learn about in the modding basics blog.

There are also some other improvements we've been working on, but that we could not finish for this patch. We're working on more granular customization of the end conditions, to let you decide exactly how your game may end, as well as unit balance, to better align the cost of units with their power. These improvements will arrive in the next patch around the middle of November.

We hope you'll have fun with the improvements of the Fabius Maximus update and the challenges of the Día de los Muertos event!

Had a couple of questions:

1. How do I start this event? Seems that there is something to do with connecting to G2G, which I have already done, but I can't seem to find where to start the event! (No indication in-game or on G2G website).

2. Does Xbox Gamepass have this update? My friend and I would like to play this challenge in multiplayer together, but we weren't sure if the update has hit Xbox Gamepass yet.

3. Do I need to be playing the Fabius Maximus beta for the events to be working? Or is simply playing the normal game acceptable?

I appreciate the thoughtfulness to this update, despite the negativity I've seen in this thread I'm super excited to be playing! Keep up the great work!

Once the game launched you have to go in the 'Extra' menu and then click on 'Community'. You should be able to connect your account with your G2G login and password. Once done go back to your main menu in game.

GamePass/Microsoft Store players please be aware: The update may release a few hours later on GamePass than on Steam. I unfortunately do not know the exact time the update will be available to you, but it should be tomorrow at the latest.

A quick note about the mod tools: We discovered a problem in the way they are set up on Steam. We're working to fix them, but they may not arrive until tomorrow. We're sorry for the further delay.

Hello, I played with the official new patch.

So there is a lot of good things, like set ressources, random opponnents, and apparently it solve a lot of bugs.

But now the bad point : it's far more too punitive about quarters costs. My game is so heavy, it take 20 turns to build the harbor on normal speed, after spamming a few quarters. C'est décourageant !! We don't move forward in the game, click on "end-turn" for doing almost nothing. There is also a lot of difficulty to get food. The weird thing is I got 2 industrial cultures, I build their emblematic quarters, surround it a bit with maker quarters. So they should be extra-powerfull and allow me to build something more. But no way. 20 turns harbor.

I like the idea, specially if it's available again on future years.

However, I have a complain: how do you participate on the event from Stadia if it get's updated so late? I'll have to play on a friend's steam version to unlock it?

Is the event also in Stadia?

Not as of the time of this writing. I'm still eagerly waiting for the update as well. It would be nice with a tentative timed schedule for our platform too, like GamePass got a mention that the event is expected to be accessible at the end of today.

I think this event is a neat surprise and will absolutely have a go at it if I can.

So you're saying I have to connect my game to your website to participate in this? I bought this game through Steam and already have to connect to Steam to play it. Why do I have to connect to two things to enjoy this Mexican-related event? I love the event. I don't love having to jump through all these hoops to participate when no other thing in the game requires this. Why is Amplitude making it so difficult to participate?

Is this:

  • World Faith: Be the religious leader of every Empire in a game.

supposed to be some kind of stand in for the fact that religion in Humankind is a non-existent feature? If so, it's badly missing the mark.

And, yeah, what other people said above about live service games. Cheap and exploitive. Players don't want a bauble. They want the game to function without bugs.

Just make the game you said was your vision. This ain't it.

Cool. Have creating custom AI opponents been added yet? Still working on it? I have a friend who does not have the game (yet) and this new avatar would be perfect to use for her AI.

Also I hope that the events repeat every year. I do like semi-randomly having different play styles for each game. Event can encourage that.

I like seasonal challenges like this, it’s a nice way to bring the player base back together in a time when the strategy game market is saturated with new content I also love what the art team did with the loading screen.
