I remember reading during the OpenDev that some people running Ryzen had very low FPS like 5-10 FPS and such, while others did not.
I was so busy playing and my brain wasn't focused as I read that. However now after I'm thinking one obvious reason for that could be that the Motherboard and Processor / CPU has an Internal Graphic Process Unit / GPU / iGPU. Like if You have the i9-10900K it does have an iGPU as long as Your Motherboard supports it. While if You have the i9-10900KF it does not have an iGPU, which means You can save a bit money if Your motherboard doesn't have a iGPU output anyway, since the KF CPU is a bit cheaper than the K CPU. I would guess it's the same for AMD Ryzen. That some come with an iGPU. Yes, with some games and apps it will chose the dedicated GPU and You would never have noticed anything, but not all apps will chose the correct GPU.
This is also a common issue if You game on a Laptop. That some games and apps will by default chose the internal iGPU rather than the dedicated GPU. The internal GPU is of course alot weaker than if You have like a dedicated GPU. Usually the Internal GPU is equavalent to maybe an old GT600 or 700 series GPU. So then Your gaming experience and FPS will suffer alot.
However that is easily fixed in Windows 10 at least.
You just need to right click on Your desktop.
Chose Display Settings
Scroll down to the bottom and click on graphics setting.
Once there You need to add the game or app You want to assign the GPU to.
Click on the button "Browse".
Browse to find the .exe for Humankind (we will have to wait and see where that is located within the steam library once the game is released of course). It will probably be somehwere like Steam ---> steamapps ---> common ---> then the Humankind directory and in that the Humankind.exe should be most likely.
Once You have found the game exe file just add it.
Back at the Graphic Settings window and You see that the Humankind.exe is added click on it and You will now find 2 buttons/choices, "Options" and "Remove". Click on "Options".
You will see 3 options. "Let Windows Decide", that is where it can go wrong and chose the iGPU. "Power Saving". "High Performance". Chose High Performance for Humankind.exe.
With High preformance chosen the game should now chose the systems dedicated GPU (next time you start the game), whatever dedicated GPU You might have (nvidia gtx 980, nvidia gtx 1060, nvidia rtx 2080, amd rx 490, amd radeon rx 5700 etc, just to mention some examples) and not the less powerful Internal GPU. Hopefully that will fix the issue with low FPS for some.
I always go in and add all my games exe files to that list just in case windows will chose the iGPU instead of the dedicated GTX 1080 GPU that I have, or the GTX 1070 in my sons machine, or th RX480 in my secondary PC. It doesn't matter that some of them don't even have an iGPU. I just do it out of habbit at this point. It is something I recommend all my gaming friends to do as well. Especially if they game on a laptop (which often have an igpu), but as I said even desktop PC's can have an internal GPU and that might be what Windows or the game choses to use instead of their more powerful dedicated GPU.
With Windows v2004 they even improved a bit how that graphic settings window looks and the options (I'm still on v1909 as I know I will probably have to set all my privacy options again if I update to 2004, since microsoft seems to like to reset all such option after a major update, so I've not bothered yet, v1909 is still supported anyways, so I feel no rush/stress).
Here is a more up-to-date video showing how to do it in Windows 10 v2004.
This is a really handy and easy to use feature in Windows 10 (as long as you can find the games exe files location and add it to the list) that I have noticed that alot of people do not even know about. So hopefully posting it here will be of use to someone.
We will have to see if it changes once again when Windows 10 v20H2 rolls out more to the public, but v20H2 is a much smaller update than v2004 was, so probably not. I know that the icons in start menu will change some (stop having like a sqaure canvas and some icons will get an updated look, as well as the start menu more follow Your chosen theme and such. Also on fresh installs or reinstalls of Windows 10 v20H2 Your taskbar will have different setup options and some stuff like that.
Sidenote: As for example for Civ 5 and Civ 6 I added two exe files for each game, since Civ 5 had both an exe file for running the game in dx9 an exe file for running in dx 11. Same with Civ 6, just that one exe file was for running Civ 6 in dx11 and the other exe file for running Civ 6 in dx12. So some games can have more than one exe file. Be sure to add the correct one, or both if needed.
