First Run 1290 FAME - I was totally clueless

I don't even know if 1290 is good or not.  I was disappointed I did not get a chance to answer questions at the end but honestly I had no clue what was going on.  I had no idea how to increase my food production, I know I need high food to gain population but I couldn't see how much food I was making per turn or my total food, I kept adding "farmers quarters" or building a bunch of them thinking that is what is needed to increase my food ??

Also why every other turn someone was trying to fight me?  I was expoloring and trying to have good relations and I kept having to run from battles, although I am not sure if I was friends with the others or not,

I absolutely love this game & have been looking forward to it for many months but during my play through i was PRAYING it would hurry up and end.... Not because the game is bad but because I had no idea what I was doing or what was going on.  My population kept going up and down for no apparent reason....

I am looking forward to an instruction book/PDF that I can read through and get a handle on all the key concepts...I think the next time IF there is a next time before the OpenDev expires I will take more quality screenshots so maybe I can get some clarification on what exactly is going on from the experts in these forums

Anyway, I am curious if anyone has gotten a score close to as high as mine or maybe higher?? - I would like to think 1290 is pretty good for a first time player :)

Honestly, you have time until tomorrow (around 6PM CEST) to launch one or two more playthroughs ;)

First things first, if you haven't done so already, when starting a new playthrough, open the Settings > Gameplay and select Beginner in the tutorial level and reset it :

That will explain you the base mechanics of the game, and you should also take the time to hover your mouse over every little text on the UI, you'd get a ton of infos ! Devs have put a lot of effort on tutorial (since first OpenDev), but some infos remain "hidden" in tooltips. So, as for food, the main info tooltip is on city screen, when hovering the mouse over the food status :

To be honest in such games things are pretty straightforward. You need food? What would you do in real life then? Build food industry. Either buildings in cities or farming extensions (they should be placed in good spots of course, because farming desert will give you less food than farming fertile soil which is again quite obvious). I think there are bugs though - I had one city with 47 food production and yet it was "stagnating". Also some cities created from outposts do not grow at all, no matter what you do (disbanding one unit in the city solves it, but I'm not sure it's working as intended and disbanding unit is also not as easy to find as in other such games I played).

Those who were attacking you were "barbarians" (I'm using Civilization's terminology). Not belonging to any civ (not Zhou nor Hittite). If they have pacifist symbol on them - they're peaceful and won't attack you. If they have a "lightning" symbol - they're aggressive and they will attack you on sight and pursue.

I don't remember what my score was, my second playthrough gave me something around 3500. But I was not pursuing it at all costs. The fame mechanics is fun, but I do not understand the need to pursue it at all costs and to gather as much as possible. For what? To please my ego with the "You've won! You're so great! screen at the end? I don't need it at all. I play for fun during my entire playthrough and if some actions I'd like to do won't give me fame - then I won't earn it and be still happy with it.

Don't play to achieve the goal set by someone else. Find your own goals and pursue them in any way you find fun.

Have you checked that your city was administered ? If not, that's why it was stagnating.

You can either assign an administrator and that will change the Food status to Growth (at least), or either, you're able to bring/create enough people in your city in order to be above 50 Food production, which will then be on Growth status.

I don't remember right now, but I think it was my capital, so yep, it had an administrator.

Yes, thank you for the tip on resetting the tutorial and expert advice.,,,,

@waykot I just now realized that hovering the cursor over things had such a detailed tooltips - thank you ...

Do I have to fight so much?  I was hoping to be able to advance through the eras WITHOUT too much fighting

Not unless you want to ;)

You might have understood that the grey coloured icons (outposts, cities, units) are for Independent Peoples, there are 2 kinds in the OpenDev : pacifists (Peace symbol) and warmongers (Lightning symbol). Pacifists won't do anything against your units/armies, unless you willfully fight them first. Warmongers though will attack you on sight, so usually either run away before the battle starts or abandon once engaged in battle. But if you outnumber them, just fight them, they're pretty harmless. If you're fortified in your cities, there's nothing to be worried about, they'll just walk by.

AI's players (Hittites and Zhou at the start) won't fight you, unless you fight them first.

Enjoy !

Yes, unless you understand all the intricacies and game mechanics well enough it can seem like a bunch of clicking "next turn" without fully appreciating what is going on.  I found myself waiting for the next turn more than is normal I think.  Once you fully understand the game mechanics I would think it will get MUCH more fun to play because behind the scenes there is so much going on to make it a very good realistic simulation to those that understand.

I am going to play throught another game this evening before the demo is shut down, hopefully the 2nd time around I will have a slightly better understanding and can build on some of the concepts that I learned from people here.  This will be my "main" game when it is released i have already decided on that.  I have ALWAYS wanted a realistic simulation game that is historically accurate that starts at the BEGINNING of humanity or very close.  HumanKind is AMAZING & I can't wait to fully understand how to play.

Welcome on board ! ;)

Enjoy your next playthrough, each time I started one, I couldn't keep pushing that "Next turn" button ! Not out of boredom though.

Oh, and you'll figure out the mechanics eventually, you just need to practice play !
