To me it will. I play earth maps in Civ only with real life starting locations (so Chinese start in China, Egyptians in Egypt and so on). In Humankind cultures are chosen and nothing will prevent guys in Mexico from choosing Greek culture and founding Athens there.

I’ve been thinking way too much about this topic actually. I think culture transitions would have to be somewhat predetermined to accommodate for historical(ish) accuracy in a historical-start map. Which is easy in some regards (Phoenicians -> Carthaginians) but more difficult for most others. Also need to know how many players on map at one time. If only 8 like in Lucy, that makes it more challenging to pull off. Independent Peoples could help fill gaps if we can select them to be historical (or mod them).  I hope it could all work out, would definitely be amazing to have a earth or regional maps or true historical scenarios. The issue is that no one area of the map had the continuity of cultures over the eras for it to fully make sense unless you pretend that, e.g. “let’s just say the Olmec are the Scythians in my Europe map”. I’m hoping mods will be flexible enough to allow us to address this with custom cultures (or at the very least renaming a culture to help with the historical pretending). Over time too maybe we’ll get “missing link” DLC cultures to fill out different historical culture “runs”, (e.g. classical and medieval Chinese cultures), which will help in historical maps.

With the list of cultures in the game the easiest way to do a historical real Earth map would be to limit it to Europe and the Middle East (as that were most of the cultures are from) for now. Assuming you can limit the culture choices enough for it to make sense..

Then expand once more cultures are added to fill in the holes elsewhere.

TBH it be to much work IMO.

It's true that making a true starting location on a world map, it will need a lot more culture choices to fill all starting location of world map for each era... That mean for playing united states we would need to play first nations before europeans become available. That can potentially make the game so great! Especially to learn about new cultures that we didn't know before. That can be also a great way to appreciate all ancestors from where we come. A good way to introduce identity and respect of ancestors. It will reduce racism and exclusion.

By the way...That could be a second expantion by adding new continents for true starting location story.

If the game lunch with a true starting location story mode... easiest to realise with a start in a europe map that can be very fun and inspiring. It will need to add more cultures to propose accurate choices for every starting location. If humankind take that direction... the game will become a legend!

For me a real earth map is the real question. If humankind don't do it like a central theme, the next civ game will just take over. There is an opportunity of making something bigger than just a shuffle story of humankind with absolutely no sense in the past or the future... People will get bored in less than one year. True starting location story mode is the way to go!  :)
