Last night as I was looking at the preorder bonuses I realized something, I have no idea what an avatar set is.

When I first saw this I assumed it was clothing but then I remembered avatar clothing is based on current culture; so it can’t be that.

We know there are no hats in the game, so it’s not that.

Maybe it means these avatars are playable characters, I.E. we can play as Lucy in game?

Maybe it means these avatars are possible opponents for us to play against?

Does anyone have any idea what an avatar set actually is?

Yes, the "Avatar Sets" will give you the option to use this Avatar for yourself when you customize yours, so you can play as Lucy or Poe. And as far as I recall, the individual components (e.g. hair, nose, etc) of some avatars may also be available to choose when customizing your avatar.

Wonderful, Thanks for clarifying this!

Steph, this is wonderful news! I'm so excited about this. I hope there are LOTS of avatars we can play as. Though I am excited to make my own and play as myself, having that as the only option would get a bit stale obviously. Just to confirm, we are only able to make one avatar to play as correct?

As a player, you have only one avatar. It's bound to your profile, not to the current match. However, I am not sure if the avatar will update in an ongoing game if you change it in the customization menu, or if changes only take effect when you start a new game.

It would be nice to be able to save avatars, I'm sure a lot of player would want to have one avatar for one game and another one for another, maybe switch back to the first one later

I’m definitely one of those players MasterPaw is referring to.

I know there will be games when I will want to play as a mad scientist, and others when I will want to play as an evil warlord (think fictional Blackbeard), which is completely different from the HRE emperor looking character I want to use when I play with my friends.

It would be really nice if there was a way to save and quickly switch between appearances.

I’m starting to think I may simply have a different philosophy on this than the HK designers.  In my view, the player character is someone I go on a journey with, rather than an in-game representation of myself.  For example, when I play Zelda games, I don’t see myself as Link, but instead, I see Link as someone I’m going on a journey with.

I was expecting that, but to get confirmation on it is still horrible news. Unless we're not limited to one profile per copy of game.

In the same vein as avatar customization (which I too would like more than one), do we have any control over making customized AI avatars or will be limited to the ones we can download from other players?

Just wanted to say thank you for answering my question. Much appreciated!

That would be an acceptable workaround for me I think.

Having one avatar is enough for me, but I can see why players would want additional avatar slots.

After going through the customization process and selecting the desired appearance, traits, and attitude, players are whisked into the game. Occasionally, I assume, players would unlock additional customization options through achievements, scoring, etc.

Player could then "up-date" their avatar with the newly unlocked options (provided they like the option) and continue the loop until satisfied.

This leaves little room to retain a "highly stylized" avatar commonly created not to be played but to be shown off on social media, forums, and shared between community members.

Some examples from titles with robust avatar creation:

I'm not saying Humankind avatars will turn out like this, but there is a niche that will attempt to push the boundaries.
