Map generator island discussion.

A few days ago I asked in the “WILL THE NEXT OPENDEV HAVE THE MAP GENERATOR?” thread, if islands would be changed.  I felt islands needed to have a high amount of population to make a meaningful contribution to your empire.  Since by nature they have fewer production tiles; given this I thought the new rule change, that districts cost 10 stability instead of 5, would greatly reduce the strength of islands, as the majority of their growth came from districts like the Naust.


What started as me asking this question has changed into a full discussion deserving its own thread.


To summarize that discussion:


Changlini, thought islands could be thought of as a trade-off from production to money, he also suggested islands could be given some unique buildings only they can build.


This lead me to suggest there could be special money generating resources such as pearls, as well as special food generating resources such as fish, shrimp, and whales, which only spawn in island regions.


Zumwalt expanded on this, writing:

In addition to bonus resources, developers can add additional coastal luxury resources: seal fur, walrus tooth, anchovies, purple and others.


The last post made there was me speculating if there should be four sets of resources:

1.  Those that spawn on continental land, like we’ve already seen, in previous opendevs.

2.  Those that spawn on the continental coast, like the ones mentioned by Zumwalt.

3.  Those that spawn on island land; these could be certain fruits and spices.

4.  Those that spawn on ocean tiles, maybe exclusive to islands far off the coast.  Things like, whale (food resource) and shark meat (luxury resource).


If you have any thoughts on this, or on how to improve islands, I'd love to hear them!

Maybe you could build a tourist district that dispensed gold for the amount of beauty on one tile? I was thinking it could be built on a desert tile with ocean tiles surrounding/near it? Just an idea.

That's interesting Tourism was brought up by Changlini in the other thread.  It felt like a dlc idea so I didn't include it here.  It could definitely add a lot of depth to islands.


A resort could definitely be a good late game money building/district

There's no Appeal mechanic in the game yet, but one could be simulated just by a land quarter that gains money from adjacent coast tiles.
