I have not played any Humankind yet but I am excited for the upcoming closed Beta. However, it is only 250 turns, How does that scale across the game? I have played civ before and thats not alot but this game looks different. Would anyone be able to tell me if 250 ends up being a long time?

I personally haven't played either the Lucy or Victor open dev, but judging from those LPs and other kinds of videos, 250 turns should get you to the end game. So it seems like for the upcoming closed Beta they plan to open up the end game and let us play-test the balance of it, etc.

I played the Victor and Lucy Opendevs extensively; Steam says I have almost 130 hours played with Opendevs.

It’s my understanding that on standard speed, the game is supposed to have 300 turns, so I wouldn’t worry about 250 turns not being long enough in terms of time.

Once I was familiar with the maps and builds, the two 150 turn Opendevs took me somewhere around 3-5 hours to complete each game, and I play very quickly.  For context, I can play an entire Civ 5/6 game on quick/online speed in around 6 hours.

Turns can last longer in Humankind compared to Civ 6. The length of the game will likely depend on how much war there is or how many cities you have.

In Civ 6 - 250 turns was a full game on fast speed which was an optimal format in my opinion, regular speed 500 turns were a little bit excessive especially in the late game. Also, keep in mind that people could win much earlier in Civ 6, score victory was rare, however in Humankind you could win only through score, so it will be full game every game. 300 turns in total is a nice amount in my opinion.

I wonder if there is a reason to make the beta 250 turns max, when the standard max is 300. Why not just let players test out the last 50 turns at that point?

I played both Lucy and Victor. I tend to play on the hardest difficulty so my experience may or may not be relevant here.

In Lucy I generally finished way before turn 150.

In Victor, most my runs ended around turn 100 or 120 when I picked the 5th culture, because you weren't allowed to play those yet, the match ended when you selected yours.

With the 5th era in the beta, I expect turn 150-180 I will have reached the 6th era and thus match over.

Now that said, they may have rebalanced a lot of this so it could be entirely different, in fact I'd be shocked if some of this weren't rebalanced as there was a lot of feedback around it.

By the way, one fun fact about technology - if you play a scientific culture, you can research 1 era ahead, so I wonder if you can play around with some of the units and buildings of the 6th era by using a scientific culture in the 5th era.

PS - When we say eras generally nomadic is the 0th era, it doesn't count as one. A bit like programming languages use 0.

The eras are: 0 - nomadic, 1 - Ancient, 2 - Classical, 3 - Medieval, 4 - Early Modern, 5 - Industrial, 6 - Contemporary
