How do Train Stations and their Railroads work?

I've built several train stations across my empire, with multiple in adjacent territories. However I can't figure out how to actually move from train station to train station without just walking it. How do I use this instant movement?

@MorshuHimself It does not "instant" move/travel per se. It's not an air-lift, teleporter or stargate after all, just a railroad, he he he !!! :)

It is that You only use 1 movement point to move from one train station to another in an adjacent territory. Kind of like an improved road system, just that it's a "railroad" You travel on. The unit or army is basically on a train traveling, just that You don't see the unit within a train. You still have to wait for the unit to move as if it walked, but use only 1 movement point to the next station. However You can do other things while that unit moves there. You don't have to sit and watch it move. If You have other actions within Your empire to carry out as well, just do them while the unit is moving. If move to a train station 3 territories away it will take 1 movement point per station, so 3 movement points. So You can get much further than if the unit could if it just walked.

Another thing to consider, that I hope might be changed/fixed before release, is that if an AI, even a friendly ally with open border agreement, puts their unit upon 1 of Your train stations, You are blocked from using that 1 movement bonus and travel to it. Very annoying. Only work-around I have found, is to place one of Your own units on each train station to occupy that tile, so no one else can block it. Not a good work around for sure and should not even be needed and not 100% that works either. Since it seems it's enough that another unit from any AI just stands on one of the rail tiles.

I found this out later, but the issue was not enemies standing on the train station, but on the tiles the railroad were on. Any interruption cancels the whole damn thing. That's just not right.

That is right. It you block the tracks, people can't pass. It makes a great strategic option - if you're attacking, you want to disrupt the enemy rail lines. If you're on the defense, you need to protect your network. You see this happened frequently from the American Civil War to WWII.

Yes, but it should not happen when friendly allied AI's also put units on a station or track. They often just randomly walks around inside Your territories and do that. Very annoying and not fun. If it was only the AI You are at war with that would make more sense.

To clarify, I was allied with the civilization blocking the railroad. So not cool.

Agreed, random vassal/allied units roaming about my territory shouldn't be able to block the trains. Furthermore, I wonder if ppl have any notes on the train being used only from one station to another. I get the u can only board from the train station part, but I kind of disagree with the getting off on train stations part. It does make balancing a bit difficult, along with pathfinding, if the units are able to leave wherever on the railroad, but I do want that my units should be able to respond quickly to invasions, instead of travelling to the nearest train station, by which point the enemy would've blocked the rails.

Enemy units being able to block railway lines is great.

Allies and vassals blocking their own railway lines is not great. That's surely not the intended design?
