Humankind announced as free with Xbox pass before release: can I refund my preorder?

I absolutely love the games this company has made and always supported them, but the Xbox game pass announcement is a slap right In the face.

We all know that prices drop and certain games go free with time, but the timing of this announcement was clearly deliberate.

I respect the decision of anyone that wants to keep his copy, but personally I feel cheated as a customer and I want to push for a refund.

Is this even possible? It's definitely not any retailers fault so I doubt how I can make my claim. Are refunds valid on pre-orders regardless on when they were made?

For a refund you'll want to talk to whatever storefront you purchased it on originally. Steam is generally very good and quick about preorder refunds: https://help.steampowered.com/en/

This is the issue though, the storefronts usually dont have the power to do much when they have sent you a key already.

Amplitude studios has comfortably put itself in a position where it doesn't have to deal with a situation they, not the sellers, created.

I am actually puzzled that i haven't seen an issue made by the community with how this pre-order is being handled. These people just took our cash while comfortably "forgetting" to mention that the game will also be free in xpass until the very last minute.

If it was through steam you can do a refund and it'll be processed in like 2 hours, automated as you haven't played

Steam refunds are simple, as already linked. You can even play for an hour and they'll still give you the refund. (I believe Epic has the same refund policy as well).

I've pre-ordered games off some smaller retail sites, like Greenmangaming and Gamebillet. They never send the actual keys until the game is released. It should not be a problem to get a refund from from any such site. The news about Humankind being on Xbox Gamepass is over a week old, I think that is plenty of time for people who pay for Gamepass to seek refunds from whichever retailer they purchased from.

...unless you've bought from some untrustworthy key seller. Then that's on you.

I don't understand why all replies are making the assumption that the pre-order was made from Steam. There are hundreds of trustworthy retailers out there, but not all of them have the flexibility Steam offers. In my case I purchased a key from Fanatical, after seeing it suggested from the Humakind community.

I don't know how Fanatical will respond yet (I have sent an email and I am awaiting their response - I read that their official policy forwards request made up to 48h before launch). However, that was not my point. My point is that this responsibility should not be left to retailers but the company itself.

Lastly, please dont tell me that one week's notice is plenty of time. I am sure we all agree that it's very easy to miss an announcement like that. We all have busy lives and we are not glued to a computer screen 24/7 searching for Humankind news. We should stick together as a community and demand to be treated with respect by companies, otherwise we end up having EAs and Activision Blizzards allover the place.

Thank you all for the input and the answers. I will keep looking into this myself as I understand that the community doesn't really take issue with this announcement, and I don't want to spam the forums with what seems to be a personal problem!
