How does the Merchant Badge work?

The AI seems to always get a reputation as a "merchant" which gives extra visibility of the map, which seems super useful.

So I bought every resource in the game, allied with all my opponents except the one who always refused. I bought resources from the merchant civs. I bought resources from all the other civs... no badge. I built dozens of market quarters. I got every merchant star.

What actually unlocks that badge?? An AI with one remaining territory and a single sailboat seems to be able to get the badge whenever it wants. I can bury the world in gold and the game is all "meh, but are you a merchant tho?"

From the Wiki :

Merchant Badge can allow Trade Nodes along your Trade Routes provide   vision within a radius, which increases with the level of the Badge. It is also a positive Badge and can improve the Attitude of other Empires.

  • Requirement: Earned when setting up a trade route moving through a third-party Empire.
    • Every 5 Resource purchases increase the Badge level by 1.
  • Effect: +1 vision on Trade Nodes per level.
    • A Level-3 Merchant Badge can provide   vision within 3-tile radius around a Trade Node.

You want the route to pass through a third party empire. Thus the AI with a single territory will easily get it, almost all of its trade routes will pass through different Empires. Being a Merchant means sharing the profits via the "on trade" bonus.

So "third party" isn't from buying from a merchant civ using their unique re-sell ability? I have to give up my dream of ever getting a merchant badge just because my civ has ports on both the east and west coast?

Can anyone confirm that the Wiki is correct? Aka, purchased only land trade routes instead of buying sea ones with no shared land border? It would also work with two land-locked empires when buying "sea" trade routes...

The Wiki is indeed correct on this topic, I have received the merchant badge easily by buying from another empire where the trade routes passe via one or more third-party Empires as well.

You can simply try to change the mode of transportаtuib for some of the routes. Keep in mind that those badges are temporary and give you only a small advantage, they are nice but not vital to get. :)

Thanks!

Yeah, I've been threatening war with empires unless they show me their maps, which totally works if you have war elephants and they don't. Now that I know how it works, I will try the less violent option to get visibility on whether I want to attack to the west or to the east. :)

I think the requrements for merchant badge was changed after Anne Bonny update. I have started a new game and almost every culture has this badge. In my opinion to get the badge now is enough to have a city and a territory which is connected by a trade route to this city. The trade route without resources is enough.
