So I won a game with Endless Mod and the last message said:

You have survived one of the four filters. To try others, choose a different game style in the next game.

What's a different game style?

I assume it has to do with making different choices in earlier parts of the questline, and perhaps choosing different cultural affinities near the end of the game.

For example, there's the religious civic that determines whether you view the Endless as gods or mortals. I chose to view them as mortals, and during the Great Filter quest the filter I had to go through was scientific in nature - well at least that's what the game said when I won, it didn't seem much like a filter based on knowledge/scientific principles. But apparently there are three others, one being financial; I've no clue what the others are. Unfortunately there's still a dearth of information online regarding the mod.

Yeah I don't remember exactly which choices I made during the first events, but I went with "ancient gods" most of the time.

Let's try to list what choices conducted to each filter.

  • First event I chose: "Ancestors"
  • Next event I chose: "Who are they?

My cultures went like this:

  • Neolithic: knowledge star
  • Ancient: Harappans (agrarian)
  • Classical: Celts (agrarian)
  • Medieval: Franks (aesthete)
  • Early Modern: Mughals (builder)
  • Industrial: French (science)
  • Contemporary: Swedes (science)

"The Gods Origin" civic: Religiously (+3 Science on Holy Sites)

"Data of the Endless" technology completed with many cities having build the Project "Ultra" infrastructure.

I got the "Grey Goo" filter (alien nanobots virus) that put the cities the virus reached into quarantine, reducing every income by 30% (all my cities were touched).

The only way to survive was building "cloth manufactories" based on Endless technology on each city.

Finally finished the official mod. Might I say I am not impressed? Space victory gets disabled by default, so you just grind for 400 turns until mod thinks you have experienced all not-so-cool narrative events. All in a name of what? Obtaining some ailien technology to overcome one of the 4 "Filters"... I had more fun with WW2 scenario from Civ2!

I absolutely loved the scenario maybe the timing was off on yours because in my case I survived the great filter before any of the other win conditions would have triggered normally, the pacing felt great. I think it is so cool how the storyline is basically the Vodyani lore. If I recall correctly there's even some empire projects that you can do to mitigate the adverse effects of the great filters that have the names of the Vodyani arks.

I got the "Grey Goo" as well. Maybe because I was at war when all this was happening, idk.

Well I don't know how you get another filter...

I made different choices for every events and used only african tribes dlc cultures and I still got the "gray goo".

events choices:

1. creators

2. how to contact them?

3. warn (1st game: support)

4. historical (1st game: materialistic)

5. ignore (1st game: creating a rrf)

gods origin: scientifically

I even built the special wonder that I forgot in my first game and allied every npc instead of making war.

So I've tried twice and got grey goo twice. The only other one I've heard people mention is the economic one.

I have a theory that the other two might be  - based on real world 'great filter' theories:

Pollution

Nuclear weapons

I'm going to try a maximum pollution run to see if that triggers anything different.

Does anyone want to try nuking the world and reporting back?

I got the economic filter which decreased my st by 50 and a ridiculously great money-income penalty.
  • First event: Ancestor
  • Next: Why did they leave?
  • Third I forgot, but if you give me a screen I can recall it
  • Fourth: materialistic
  • 5: RRF

cultures:

  • Ancient: Harappans
  • Classical: Carthaginians
  • Medieval: Khmar
  • Early Modern: Ming
  • Industrial: France
  • Contemporary: China

The Gods Origin civic: Rationally

"Data of the Endless" technology completed with many cities having build the Project "Ultra" infrastructure, too.

Suffering from the economic nerf, even I researched all technologies and just clicking the “endless” next turn button, the event that allows me to deal with the filter and achieve victory is still not seen. I’m considering it’s a bug and planning to quit the game.

I got Grey Goo, solved it rather anticlimactically, but decided to keep playing, started getting "Test 4" "Test 5" messages with Vodyani imagery on the bar and one event popped up telling me the creation of an Ark (!) was progressing well, when I built second or third stage of satellite project.

I tried a first time a weird game in which I got the « grey goo », as most players seem to do. Nothing from my run differs massively from what has already been detailled in previous posts. I tried to get some era stars for the lunar event, not knowing if it's possible with the mod enabled while at the same time not building a single makers quarters. Maybe not the best setup to discover the mod but I had lowered the difficulty quite a lot (nation) to be sure to encounter no trouble and played a surprisingly easy but full of fight game.

I tried then a second game with the idea in mind that the « data of the endless » technology is optional and I shoud try to forgo it completely to get a different filter. To be sure to be left alone, I played on the first level of difficulty.
I started with « monsters » , then « who are they », choose « grant» and then « science » when I got the Vaulters and got a holy site destroyed, I choose « scientifically » for the battle in the sky, got an « impact », went also with « scientifically » for the civic, chose « support » for the tech event, refused to build any project ultra, still took the sponsor in case I'd need it later, at that point, I completed all research not getting any event. I finally decided to unlock the « data of the endless » technology and got the Virtuals event so late I had no Wonder to build anymore and quite some margin for the city cap, so I went « philosophical » and finally did not get « grey goo » but the pollution event. I was myself quite well in negative but other players seem to have decided for me. I got to build useless coreleecher plants, which are not the worst building of the game and got hit by gravity troubles which you can not really tame. All that leads to the « Industrial great filter » and the construction of a space station. Funnily enough, I got messages with the same two dudes while sending stuff in space earlier, before discovering the data of the endless and guess it's part of the necessary infrastruture to win with this filter and produce the great ark.

As I'm pretty sure my small summary will be bland and boring, I add a link to a more visual experience, as I thought of taking some screenshots during my very boring game. https://imgur.com/a/CaxHbVe

I've found 3/4 filters thus far.

Economic

Grey Goo

Gravity Anomalies, as no one mentioned this one, you get to build a special power plant for a massive industry boost, but then you start experience gravity issues and hexs start getting destroyed.  This forces you to build an Ark and abandon the planet.

Working on #4, trying a maxed influence game next.

I think it depends on the affinity in your last era. Scientific you get Grey Goo, Agrarian and merchant you get the Economic Crisis one, and apparently Builder gives you the Gravitational Anomalies one.

It seems to be the key!

Sweden -> Scientific -> Grey Goo

China -> Merchant -> Global Instability (Economic Crisis)

Australians -> Builder -> A new rift appeared (Gravitational Anomalies)

Nigerians -> Agrarian -> Grey Goo

Expansionist -> ???

Aesthete -> ???

Militarist -> NONE

I got the Gray Goo on my first run-through, but even after the popup saying "Game over, you won" it kept giving me turns, and I didn't get the achievement.

This time I went heavily into science, and researched quite a bit of modern tech before officially entering the modern era. Perhaps that broke the game. When I did change eras, I got a popup about "Elutel station is well under way" despite not having gotten any other messages or building any space projects.

After finishing all techs, and hitting "next turn" while building repeatables for about 30 turns, I'm a bit baffled. I built the surveillance satellite sequence, nothing new. Guess I'll go to Mars.

I know its been 7 months and i Dont know if anybody cares anymore but I think i might of gotten the secret filter, i went with Japanese (scientists but i had over 2000 production in every city and over 200 Food in every city with over 100k Money) but for the virtuals i went philosophy and i got something were i got a cache of their tech and implement it into my cities, then i got -75% of Everything and -2 Unit Speed, and the Virtuals turned into a virus and multiple multi city emp charges to stop them and i ended up getting the soul of one of the virtuals as the end of game prize for beating the virtual great filter

Has anyone else manage to get this ending? I'm not entirely sure how I got here but I'm willing to post the steps that I do remember later on if people ask. Is this the fourth and final filter that I could not find any information about? I would love to hear the thoughts of the Developers because right now I think I might be the first one to find this
