This is why Swahili is THE BEST Merchant Culture

Swahili is so good and perfectly fulfills requirements of my empire in Medieval Era that I cannot stop myself from selecting them each and every time since African DLC was introduced. Money generated by +3 Money per number of unique types of resources bonus is already insanely lucrative enough by itself but if you also consider the fact that emblematic district of Swahili, Bandari, is actually a harbour and you can build them even in outposts with spending influence then you will realize that Swahili is the shortest path to become the richest empire on earth.

Following is an atypical result you can expect from a less than ideal Swahili game since this game was rushed after Medieval Era for Science Victory to unlock Da Vinci achievements. It's still not bad in terms of money generation, though.

The real benefit of Swahili, however, lies in their potential ability to provide an abundance of stability when Swahili Legacy Trait of Caostal Haven and regular harbour districts are combined to create generous synergies for wonder-like stability bonuses. This wouldn't dethrone the King of Stability, the Austro-Hungarians, but it's a potent contender for the title.

Potential stability bonus that the following placement can generate is +220 stability if you build regular districts around these Bandaris and Harbours. You may even achieve up to +310 stability if you opt to turn this area into a Commons Quarter zone. What wonder or infrastructure can provide this much stability?

[!Rant Alert!] No, I don't think Swahili is OP and no, they don't need to be nerfed. OP IS GOOD! [End of Rant]

Indeed Swahili is a really nice culture. I wasn´t super fan of doing merchant runs, but one day I decided to give it a try and I think is one of my favourite ways to play :)

Well, after all, who doesn't like the tinkling sound of gold in empire coffers. :)))

I have a plan to follow a Harbour-only path in a future campaign with Phoenicians>Carthaginians>Swahili>Joseon in a chaotic archipelago type map but I'm waiting for a rework first on Joseon, which was mentioned here: https://www.games2gether.com/amplitude-studios/humankind/forums/168-general/threads/48208-suggestion-inspired-by-davinci-event#post-351955.

Here's me, and I'll copy your ending: [!Rant Alert!] Swahili don't need to be nerfed. OP IS GOOD! [End of Rant]

Anytime devs think something should be nerfed, they should instead think, well who's missing out and how can that weak one be buffed with a fun or useful mechanic.

So, Stability and Swahili, eh? What was it I were saying?    :)))

End game results of a Medieval Era with Swahili (Mycenaeans > Carthaginians > Swahili > Dutch > Siamese > Chinese):

Mate, sorry I know it's out of context but how did you get that light blue color for your empire? I only got available the ones the devs released the game with.

I did hear about the addition of more colors but I don't know how to get them.

It's in Game Settings>Accessibility>Empire Colours.

Here you can customize default colours for each slot.

I disagree with ya. I think they should be nerfed: the Mtepe currently allows them to be better at naval exploration than the Norse. They should be worse at traveling the deep seas.

And yes, dont touch the LT or EQ, they're perfect

Noooooooooo! Stay away from Mtepe; it's not Swahili's fault if they are better sailors than always drunk Vikings. :)

Joking aside, isn't Langskip better than Mtepe anyway?

Combat Strength/Naval Movement

  • Langskip: 23/6, Ignores any penalties from deep water
  • Mtepe: 20/4, Receives damage after consecutive turns at Ocean

Don't forget that a) with Mtepe you can embark and disembark for no cost, and thus you gain a turn when you embark and another turn when you land (and even more if you cross big islands by foot) and b) the rate the Mtepe loses HP when in ocean is so low you can almost always reach the new world even if you have to traverse 2-3 turns of ocean.

I wants to mention that there was a bug with Bandari (giving extra stability near harbours, more than it should be), and should be fixed on the patch.

Ah, thank you.  I'm big fan of the Swahili, but I found their Haven stability benefit around clustered harbours a little excessive.  Curious to see what the new numbers are, but I really do love this culture!

At the moment harbour status is applied twice for Bandari giving +20 Stability for each adjacent district instead of +10. This will be fixed in live Bolivar Update. In a right combination of harbour cluster Swahili and Bandari will still be epic for stability generation.
