Steps to reproduce

(See also notes on system setup below)

Start or open a game of Humankind.

Exit Humankind.

Expected behaviour

Humankind opens a browser for feedback on the beta.

Actual behaviour

Black screen with frozen mouse pointer.

If you connect to the system using VNC and the Basic Display Adapter (i..e. bypassing the GPU) you will find Radeon has crashed and the AMD bug report app has appeared. Sometimes Humankind has also crashed, but not always. Sometimes the browser opens for feedback, sometimes not. But the crash on exit is reproducible every time.

Crash not on exit

I have once had a similar crash without exiting (at turn end IIRC), but I could not reproduce this, so it may be unrelated.

Diagnostic data

The AMD Bug Report tool provides data about the crash, which you will find in the attached .ZIP files. Because I usually use this system for beta-testing Simutrans (the free transport simulation), I have Dr MinGW setup to produce backtraces on every crash. So in the attached bug report packages, as well as the data collected by AMD, you will also find .txt files with those backtraces.

I have also attached one Humankind Diagnostics file from the third crash; I might be able to find others if required.

The first crash report was with an earlier version of the Radeon Software (I think 20.4 but I forgot to note it, sorry). All the others are with the latest stable version: 21.4.1.

There is nothing in Humankind's "dumps" directory.

System set-up

The system is a full Windows 10 installation with Humankind installed from Steam in the usual way. But it is running as a VM on a system (Intel i7 6700, AMD RX 480 8GB VRAM, and 10GB RAM) provided by a cloud gaming provider (Maximum Settings). I access the system using Parsec. You may suspect that the crash is caused by this setup. I can't rule it out. But I have played many other games on this setup and only Humankind produces these crashes, so I think the problem is likely due to Humankind and/or the GPU driver rather than the fact that Windows is running as a VM.

Other notes

I have bug reported this to AMD, but they are vastly more likely to prioritize and fix this if Amplitude raise the issue too. AMD seem to have closed their European Dev Support team, but you can email their general Support here.
