iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)

3.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2 GB

Big Sur 11.2.2 (20D80)

Good:

The game starts, runs, allows Avatar selection (with very laggy cursor), shows Cloud saves from a PC run I have with the same Steam name, the audio works and sounds great, and the visuals are amazingly beautiful (much better than on my Alienware PC).

Bad:

Even after waiting 10 minutes for the game to "settle in", the cursor lag made the game unusable. Bu "unusable", I mean "not able to be used". I don't use the word "unusable" as a rhetorical device like some overly dramatic reviewers. I can move the mouse to the side of the screen, then the cursor will pause and rubber band to where I moved the mouse to. But since I didn't have a cursor to tell me where I moved the mouse to, I had to move the mouse, wait for the cursor to go somewhere, then move the mouse closer to my target, then wait for the cursor, repeat as needed.

The other input devices (keyboard, scroll wheel) were equally unusable.

The frame rate on the World Map was somewhere around maybe 3 or 5 frames per second. Not a real problem since I couldn't play the game anyway.

Solution:

Yes I know I need to buy a new iMac if I want to play modern games.

I have a MacBook Pro (16 inch, 2016), Intel Core i7 2,7 GHz, 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3,  Radeon Pro 455 with Big Sur 11.5.2 and I have the same problem. I've set the graphics options to quality but the game is very slow down. Sometimes, sound arrive before the frame.

I wouldn’t expect a 2021 game to perform well on a 2014 computer.  The newer iMacs have much better graphics cards and twice the graphics memory.

I agree, 2014 computers can't handle 2021 games. At some point I'll get a new iMac!

Thanks, I'll be on the lookout for what Mac setups can run Humankind reasonably.

Get a PC instead and save the $1000 for something else

Similar setup for me, too — late 2014 Retina iMac, just with an i7 core, 32GB RAM, and Mojave. Based on the "minimum requirement", both our machines should run this fairly well on low settings. But exact same abysmal frame rate and laggy performance even on "Fastest" settings.

And yeah, yeah, a game from 2021 is gonna be slow on a 7 year old computer, I realize that, but I'm thinking it should still be able to run decently on this thing at low settings, especially going off what's been reported as minimum requirements!

I have a few things to add to the "too old" thing:

1.) On my Imac 2017, I'm also not able to play the Beta.

2.) On my Macpro 2008 (!) with an R9 nano, it's indeed playable, but not as nice as on Windows.

3.) Even the Windows mimimum specs states GPU from 2013. So a computer from 2014 really should be able to handle this game.

So don't discount old computers on a Beta. It has to be optimized, that's the point of the Beta.

And the devs need to know that.

This is a really dumb sentiment, especially because this game targets Macs.

Hey thanks! Three things:

1. I've already done that! 2018 Alienware R7!

2. I've NEVER heard that before!

3. It's OK to be helpful instead of snarky and obnoxious!

Have the same issue on

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)

2,2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Almost unplayable. I've tried to set lowest graphic settings and even reduce screen resolution a lot (game starts, I can even start map, but I have like 1-2 fraps per second, and picture is twitching).
I't about optimization or game will not work on old Mac book laptops? I thought that could play at least with small video settings. Because I can play Dota 2 and Civilization 6 on middle or highest settings nowadays. Didn't thought that for humankind will be not possible to play at all

I just found that the game doesn't lauch with the dedicated GPU and use the intel one. Impossible to change with gfxstatues or gSwitch, the game always use Intel HD graphics...
