How Cheddahbeast lost at HUMANKIND™ or how I learned I loved this game.

~Turn 15 - The Ancient Era (Cheddahbeast, Olmecs) - Or where I lived in bliss of the future that awaited me...


I had a very good Neolithic, , I (Cheddahbeast) start Caralans, I expand north and north-east, every game I have played with Runsfromcops; he ALWAYS beats me to the new world so when my settlers arrive I am outmatched, so my plan this game is to quickly either make peace or make war and call it a peace with the AI on my continent so I can focus on the new world.


I spend this era building industry and preparing to attack Spiffing Brit to the north-east. No contact has been established with the other continent yet.


~Turn 45 - The Classical Era (Cheddahbeast, Achaemenid Persians) - Planning for the future


I have stacked grievances on SpiffingBrit, I have the necessary hordes of immortals to make my move. I declare war and begin crushing Spiffingbrit, in the meanwhile...Superduche and Zerator begin to skirmish on the northwestern island chain of Corvus. On viewing a trade route with Zerator, I SEE that MY FEARS ARE TRUE EARLIER THAN I COULD HAVE IMAGINED. RUNSFROMCOPS HAS DAISYCHAINED ACROSS ISLANDS TO THE NEW WORLD. The only path I can currently see on MY continent to make it with my current tech is to go to the north east and do the same. There is no time for planning, I NEED to war with Spiffingbrit.


~ Turn 80 - Classical Era (Cheddahbeast, Achaemenid Persians) - All according to plan

Nothing worth writing home about in regards to war with Spiffingbrit, the AI treat their troops like zombie hordes, just running them into my immortals, recreating a sort of reverse human body wall as seen in 300. I've settled the new city of Parsa beside the north eastern island chain to support my move to the new world, as well, I've found a small island to the east of my capital that I will be able to also reach the new world from. I begin ferrying troops across the islands, unaware of the true situation at hand.


~ Turn 95 - Medieval Era (Cheddahbeast, Ghanians) - Things heat up

The new world is a rough place, I am attempting to build a beach head in the north east but I can see that via an arms deal with Zerator, Runsfromcops is starting to create hordes of mongol archers, made even cheaper by the fact his ancient wonder is the temple of Pi-Ramses, I pick up the colloseum and build it near my capital of Caral. I pull back my immortals and modernize them into pikemen, unfortunately I have a large portion of my army on the north western beachhead on Pavo, which is a lowland overseen by the high cliffs of Tik'al. It looks like my settlement in the southwest of Pavo is my best new world hope; but bringing my armies down from up-north is impossible and Runsfromcops has settled the city of Oxwitik in the mountains to block further expansion without war. 


There have been several skirmishes in the southwest of Pavo between myself and Runsfromcops on the territory between my settlement and Oxwitik, and I have 6 'attacked me' grievances ready to make into demands. I recall there is a quote said by some russian prior to the russo-japanese war of 'A quick short war to shore up the homefront', in retrospect, this was my parallel to that. I am the Ghanians, raking in megabucks through trade, if I can have a quick war where Runsfromcops has to pay 12k the scale will be tipped FOREVER in my favor. This is my moment, he refuses my demands and I declare war.


Another thing to note, at this point my ally (Superduche, Pink) decides to go to war with Zerator (Black) over the northwestern islands of the continent of Corvus.

 

~Turn 100 - Nothing new to add map wise for the next 30 turns, Runsfromcops has gone Norsemen in Medieval era, I try to apply pressure to Tik'al while I build an army in the south and in my capital to ferry to southern Pavo, the trek is arduous, uphill, and through rivers. When we reach the walls of Oxwitik, we are outnumbered, surrounded by superior forces, and my armies are all on river tiles; the slaughter is quick and my northern army is gone. In the south I bring siege to Tik'al, but please, let me show you what we are up against:

~ Turn 135 -  Cheddahbeast (Spanish, Early Modern Era) - The tides turn

While I initially planned to end this war quickly, now I just don't want to LOSE it, if I lose it I lose the new world! This is a war of survival, I might live if I surrender but the game will be set in stone! I make a desperation play, every battle has been a struggle as Runsfromcops can outproduce me if we go for mongol hordes due to his Pi-Ramses wonder, so I decide to go up to Early Modern Era as spanish and get conquistadors as soon as possible. As well, my megabuck factory of trade is gone, my ally Superduche is now vassalized by Zerator, Spiffingbrit is mad at me, and I'm left with just sadmummy who has nearly 0 resources to trade. 


For the next 15 turns, there are several sieges of Oxwitik, always nail bitingly close, but the terrain makes siege nearly impossible, both our war scores stay at 100 this entire time due to razing of ports, killed units, grievances of destroyed trade routes.


Runsfromcops has gone Ottomans, he intends to get janissaries as soon as possible to put up a counter to my conquistadors.


In a completely OTHER note, I sent a small force of conquistadors up north to Tik'al, find the city contains only a SINGLE janissary and lay siege. I take the city! I am sitting at 100 war support, his now below 50 and quickly dropping! I move my army out of Tik'al to begin razing the attached territories.

~ Turn 145 -  Cheddahbeast (Spanish, Early Modern Era) - There is no panic in Pavo 

Leaving Tik'al was a mistake, its recaptured with no battle 5 turns later, my army that captured it is now being chased by a superior force, Oxwitik is just stacking corpses on both sides, and EVERY SINGLE AI HAS DECLARED WAR ON ME. Envoys I forgot I had on auto-roam are being killed by Runsfromcops HE IS BACK AT 100 WAR SUPPORT THE WAR IS ETERNAL.


THERE IS A MOMENT HE IS AT 10 WAR SUPPORT HERE


At the time, I think I am kind of ok with these AI declaring war, the coliseum is generating 2 draftees with every declaration and I am spending all my leverage to keep their war support low so I need only win one battle or take one city to end it and demand money in return; thus allowing me to fund more units in the new world for the only war I think that matters. There is an issue of population in Pavo, I actually do not have the population to make units anymore in my city there and now must ferry units across; but now Runsfromcops is starting to build cogs and now carracks to patrol the sea lanes with his Norsemen bonuses making this a much harder task. I lose an island in the north chain, carrack support in battle is making things difficult when fighting on the coast.


~ Turn 146 -  Cheddahbeast (Germans, Industrial) - There IS panic in Pavo

Alright, my problems are - Runsfromcops rules the waves, I am losing conventially against him, he is allied with EVERY AI, and every couple turns I am at WAR with every AI. I see that Superduche constructed the Citadel of Alamut wonder, currently I think that I can end this unconventially. It will take some time for runsfromcops to be ready to land on the continent of Corvus, in this time I need to:
1. NOT VASSALIZE NOT DEMAND REPARATIONS, but to DESTROY all AI on my continent, I need the ENTIRE continent behind me if I am to hold up, the fame score is neck and neck, if I can just not die and rush a win condition to end the game it is still feasible.

2. Capture to citadel of Alamut for 25% cheaper stealth units

3. With the cost reduction of the citadel of alamut on u-boats, produce mass amounts of u-boats, partisans, and potentially in contemporary era: guerrillas to make the war impossible for runsfromcops to prosecute.


For the next 10 turns I make the continent mine, runsfromcops tries a few landings near Berlin and near Parsa which are NOT easy battles due to him providing naval support from the coast for his landing troops, and we have a large naval engagement (without submarines, I'm hiding that I am building these) south of Parsa (all denoted with X below).


~ Turn XXX -  Cheddahbeast (Germans, Industrial) - There IS panic

The battles on my continent have made me nervous, I am always beating his infantry but the damage his ships are doing to me are making these battles even instead of overwhelmingly in my favour - war support still stands at nearly 100 for each of us. I send a small number of line infantry supported by partisans to what looks like the undefended southwestern coast of Pavo. On landing, my troops are ambushed by Evidencebureau agents, but REVERSE UNO I had move my partisans further inland to scout before landing my line infantry! BUT he brings some ships in off the coast to support his units. It is at this moment I see my doom; the ships I send to this battle to deal with his ships are soundly beaten by two ironclads due to Runsfromcops having:

Runsfromcops has something else:
1. Hotel des Invalides

2. Lighthouse of Alexandria

3. Norsemen naval bonuses

4. Ha Long Bay

5. IRONCLADS IRONCLADS BY GOD I HATE THEM DONT GET ME STARTED ON IRON-

6. His ships have more veterancy.

7. Kaiserliche Werf


I see the rest of my U-boats and decide that if I am to achieve my goal of naval dominance I need to solve problems #2 and #7 from that list.

I send my largest U-boat force in a sort of 'russian baltic fleet gets sent to the pacific moment' on a ten turn voyage to hunt down and raze his lighthouse of alexandria and kaiserliche werf.


When they arrive, I split my fleet, 6 u-boats will raize the Werf, two U-boats will be split from the fleet to the two nearest ports to block unit production (this is a lost cause the second I click the raze button I see there are nearly 8 ports in the vicinity).


The next turn, 3 Ironclads are paid for immediate construction and engage my U-boats. This is where the feeling of my doom starts to set in...at the end of the battle in 3 phases of combat, all U-boats are destroyed and a single Ironclad still remains.


Ok, next move, I have spent almost all leverage I have gathered all game on keeping black at near 0 war support, black has a LOT of troops, black has a LOT of navy, black is ALLIED with Runsfromcops, I have many grievances and a LOT more fame, I declare war on black, beat up his vassal pink in one battle, and instead of demanding money or territory from black, I vassalize him - what a coup de grace! good luck runsfromcops!


~ Turn XXX+N -  Cheddahbeast (Japanese, Contemporary Era) - When all of your heroes are gone

Runsfromcops has gone Chinese in the contemporary era, has built the pentagon, has the temple of Pi-ramses - my U-boat fleets are destroyed, artillery (shown as a triangle in the image below) now sits on the north eastern island chain of Corvus and bombards Parsa every turn, with Ironclads harrying any attempt to lands and strike back.


What I thought was a genius move of vassalizing black has blown up in my face, 2 turns after vassalization, black loses the LARGEST city in the game with the most territory, he moves his armies on to the water where they are destroyed in their ships, my 100 war support that I have maintained for nearly 90 turns of constant war has dropped below 50. To stop bleeding war support I grant freedom to black WHICH GRANTS THE CITY CAPTURED TO RUNSFROMCOPS, giving him the islands to the southwest of Berlin (circled in yellow below), he can do what he is doing in the north to Parsa to Berlin now too! Instead of working to protect Parsa, I spend the last of my treasury on an army of partisans, I don't think Runsfromcops realizes what I do, how dangerous his new gains are to me, I will pre-position partisans on the island chains and raze them before he can send units to secure them. 


In the north Parsa is destroyed by bombardment, war support drops every turn due to bombardment, my cities are all depopulated, the citizenry pressed into service, every man thrown at the enemy to buy one more turn, the only hope now is maybe fame via technology victory, if I can just get reisens out into the field maybe I can do something. ALSO I would have gone Soviets but MY OLD BUDDY OL PAL SPIFFINGBRIT beat me to it! AND HES ONLY ON THE NEW WORLD! AND I CANT TRADE WITH HIM BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE ON OF MY PORTS HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY RUNSFROMCOPS! RUNSFROMCOPS CAN TRADE WITH HIM THOUGH AND SPIFFINGBRIT HAS NO ISSUE SELLING HIM 8 WEAPONS LUXURIES! 


My attempt to secure the island chains fails, I prematurely begin razing the first one before I have every unit in position, the reason for this is simple, PANIC, every turn that I see the bombardment at Parsa I think; HE MUST SEE THIS AND BE SALIVATING AT DOING THIS TO BERLIN! I show my hand too early and am beaten back in just disastrous battle after disastrous battle (again, HE has soviet weapons from spiffingbrit, we are fighting on HIS territory here, the whole point of using partisans was to block him even being able to put units here).


~ Turn XXX+N+Y Cheddahbeast (Japanese, Contemporary Era) - The Krieg is over

I don't have my timeline perfect, but we surpassed 100 turns of constant war between myself and Runsfromcops, there is no move left to make. Checkmate, I spend the whole turn not thinking of how I can turn it around now, but playing back the past 150 turns, reaching further and further back to think of how things could have ended differently had I only done X,Y, or Z action instead. I am haunted by my mistakes.


This campaign was played over 4-5 different sessions several hours each at normal speed, it is time to concede defeat. I leave you with my internal monologue:

(Note: Runsfromcops == Katulu, the reference to black being peaceful is that ZERATOR in EVERY GAME EXCEPT THIS ONE normally goes crazy and attacks runsfromcops and goes to war with him constantly EXCEPT THIS GAME)


This game happened a while back so going through the details is a bit hard, there were definately moments or 'plays' that were what I would call 'epic' but are minor details in retrospect - each one being the equivalent of squeezing water from a stone to survive one more turn (on both sides...at least in the first half of the war). I would rank this in my top 3 HUMANKIND experiences. Fame scores between human opponents were neck and neck, every time you finished a session winning and came back to continue next, the tides of war would reverse.

Thanks for sharing this amazing experience, it was really fun to read. And yes the Ironclads are a bit strong :P
