I've seen what gets built on enemy worlds, so never. If they get around to making the AI put appropriate structures in each system instead of the random drivel it currently is, then I'll give it a go.

Sometimes because we're in alpha and I want to see the AI's behavior. In general I prefer to take the control directly

Not tried it yet. I guess it might have a function when it comes to mopping up near the end of the game when you know that you're about to win (to avoid micromanaging loads of systems).

Then again, as an alternative, I could just set those systems indefinitely to ind-sci or ind-dust conversion.
