the way weapons and defenses work now kinetics work fine if you use enough of them at any range... let alone with a hero or XP'd fleet.

I would prefer all weapons to work regardless of range, just require specific defenses. Then range would not add useless confusion but instead turn combat into a battle of wits of choosing cards with nearly equal fleets.

Although if that happened, there would be useless confusion as the fans start debating over whether or not it's more "realistic." Really, I think the current system is fine as-is.

Yeah, I can see that argument. Although, it would be pretty bad from a gameplay perspective. Kinetics would only be useful in one phase, so you're basically making the other weapon types overpowered. If you make the close combat phase longer to match, then the battles start to reach ridiculous lengths. If you shorten the medium and long range phases, then you're back at your original problem of the battles being too short.

What I am saying is, that combat should ideally be long, medium, short, medium, long... two fleets passing through each other. For it to end at short range regardless of outcome is silly.

It's also hard to explain why they would continue battling for more phases, or for longer phases, considering the game is turn-based. You could argue that there simply isn't enough time in a turn for the battle to go on much longer.
