It's funny how they say this is their dream game, their "magunm opus"

So a completely unique universe, meticously crafted and nourished, carefully built up and designed, was just your stepping stone for your magnum opus which is a Civ clone?

Better be a damn good game then.

Exactly my soughts, Lightjolly. I understand it's just a PR talk, like "we want to create real rival to Civ series" to show seriousness of ambitions put into project, but the way it was worded leaves bitter feeling expressed via OP's topic start.

It's not unthinkable that a dev team that wanted to make 4x games was inspired to do so by Civilization, with some variation on the concept that inspired them to make the games in the first place always lurking on the edge of their minds. Now they got the chance to make their dream game, it's not hard to believe in something like that.

Fully agreed.

Stepping on such a genre steps as Civilization could be intimidating. Instead, building and growing their own fan base on smaller games, with their unique footprint, could have been easier.

Now that they're fully grown, they can tackle such a challenge. Seems logical.

But why you guys always want to confront the two objectives, or worse, want to imply that by making such a new game is a insult to what they've done in the past ?

It's simply evolution, baby ! People and organizations tend to want new things or to perform differently, from time to time. It's not only natural, but healthy too =)

Sounds good, so far.

I may be a bit disappointed by mixing really obsolete units with more modern ones on the same battlefied, but I need to have more details to be sure about how to take it.

More power to them if that's what they desire, and I'll be there day one regardless.  Just don't be suprised down the line if(when) Humankind breaks record sales and the dev's (and Sega) have little incentive to go back to the Endless series when a superior civ clone rakes in much more spondulicks.

I guess I'm on the mechanics side of the Amplitude camp, the Endless universe is good for a fantasy world but I was drawn in by the new ideas Amplitude brought to strategy games and theres no story more compelling than human history.

SEGA's cash cow.

If I may offer some perspective here: a cash cow is a reliable franchise that brings in numbers on a regular basis.

A cash cow is not, ever, a new franchise whose first game already requires your studio to nearly double in size simply to be able to take on the task of creating it. This is making a bet and taking a risk, the actual opposite of that. With Humankind, we're going all out to, quite simply, try and make the best game we've ever made. But it's still a bet (although we're thinking this is one we can indeed pu off, in the end, this will be for you to judge).

SEGA have a number of solid franchises that have over the years managed to pull in great numbers of players and achieved quite a lot. I can understand why you are expressing concerns that this is the way a non-Endless game would be going, as with all changes of habits, or in this case, of franchise.

Nonetheless, I don't think that cash cow is an apt description of us, nor will it be, for a long time.

While I do strongly question the decision to try to compete directly with Civ and the hundreds of other historical 4X games out there instead of making Endless Legend 2, I am willing to give this a chance.  All the best of luck to Amplitude on this project.  Can't wait to see the finished product.

The thing is, though, there aren't hundreds of historical 4x games.  There are lots of space-related 4x games, but the historical genre is occupied by the Civ franchise and really nothing else (games like Through the Ages are a very different beast).

I think it's a smart business decision.  There are many different ways a game of the history of human culture can be written, and Firaxis can only focus on one approach, which for any given game in the series will appeal to some people and not to everyone.  I'm looking forward to Amplitude's take on the genre.

One of my biggest hopes (other than that I enjoy HK), is that HK is a commercial success and inspires a third studio to enter the space.  I think the market for this genre is may be bigger than any one studio can appeal to.  More takes on the genre offers more choice.

And in terms of the Endless franchise, presumably learnings from HK will flow back into future launches of those titles.

The trailer seems to make it obvious, sounds exactly like his work.

I went to his website and asked him himself!

Hello
Thank you for your email. I didn't work on the HumanKind trailer but i'm in charge on the music ingame.
Still lot of work to do ....

Arnaud

So, yes! I'll be buying the game for the soundtrack, because I enjoy all of FlybyNo's work very much.

And if you haven't searched around, you should take a look at the Maobi albums on Bandcamp. They both feature Arnaud Roy (FlybyNo) and Gary Lawrence Soubrier (the vocals in From Dawn to Dusk (Gary's Version) [Endless Legend], Worship the Endless [ES2] and The Endless Gary's Version [ES]) as well as some other members that, while nice, are not immediately familiar from an Endless Space perspective.

I don't know if links are cool here, so I'll just let you do a quick search yourself.

Long live Arnaud Roy!

according a interveiw clip from one of the main devs. They made amp studios for this game. but early days they did not have the experience for it. Made Endless universe and after 3 (4) games under their belt. Now they are ready to kick som Civ butt and make Humankind

Reminds me of Colossal order company.

They also admitted they didn't have experience to begin with a city building game right away. They first started on city transportation games (cities in motion 1&2) but they always wanted to eventually make a city builder game.  After a few years, they felt they were ready and developed a really successful game - Cities skylines, who absolutely destroyed the simcity genre.
