Maybe they decide their own genders. That would be cool, very progressive.

The gender distinction could be based on their language, where gender is simply assigned based on the object (like French or Arabic), or in this case the Ameoba's purpose.

Fine, if there is going to be any gender swapping, there better be 5 to 7 genders available. Believing there are only two genders in space is sexist. ಠ_ಠ

Reminds me of this. Warning: totally safe for work, depending on how immature your coworkers are.

In the recent polls, We're currently voting for Amoeba Hero bios. Does anyone find it odd that this race has genders? Some heroes are referred to as a 'He' or a 'She'. I know this is science fiction and all but...

Amoebas: Sexier Than Anyone Knew

When a race is called Amoeba, I would have assumed they would be asexual. Wouldn't they have genderless pronouns like.. I don't know... Zhe? Xe?

kinda thought they were one sex ... but then again once they met other races perhaps they started to take on male/female aspects to there personalitys ... then again they may need another amoeba to produce young rahter than the obvious cell division youd expect =X a transfer if gentic info so to speak .. tho that wouldnt neccesarly make them be one sex or another =X

Actually that one would be fairly uninteresting. It'd have a pink girl with little blue nubs hanging off in random places.

Theory: Amoeba have no physical gender, but exposure to gendered races and concepts have lead to those with certain personalities choosing to identify as He or She. Those who are It might even find this practice silly! Who knows!

Remember, gender is a spectrum, not a binary switch. It's also much more about self-identity than anatomy. All we really know here is some Amoeba are addressed as He, some as She, some as It. Nothing more.

I agree with this statement.

Sounds like they're dumbing down for the other races or the intolerable ones.

Well bacteria's do have some male traits... they have something called a "sex Pilus" In which bacteria can swap genetic materials with another bacteria. smiley: smile

Granted Amoebas are not bacteria but still there is "some" basis to allow for "genders" in such a species.

I find this theory very probably.. It's easy to forget the cultural interaction is a two-way street. Even in the cases of one culture conquering another culture.

Regardless, I personally don't mind the Amoebas having a referred gender.

Objection! This is only an artist rendering! This is not solid evidence!

I'm all for the idea of it being genderless, but if it has no gender it is either Asexual or bisexual in a hermaphrodite standard that either one could do either part. It would really depend cause the Amoebas can be different from instance to instance, I'd just like to see more of this discussed by the writers behind the race for more clarification. But all in all gender is just dependent on what part you play in reproduction. But to be scientifically accurate and in a modern day we have references such as

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amoeba#Anatomy

Amoebas reproduce Asexually and do not exactly require another to do such.
