Space Empires V had nebula also. Kind of an interesting way to hide traps due to the limited sensor ranges.

While Engineering star types would be cool, it would be such a late game technology that I'm pretty sure there are other things we could ask for that would be more important in the Dev's time.

However I would agree that they types/bonuses to planets should have at least a basic tie to their star type.

Been lurking so far, but figured if I were gonna break my silence eventually I might as well do it to support a great idea. Love it. ^^

I agree with the "Stars having different stats and effects" part, but the "Terraforming a star" part...errr...no? There are a couple of things in this game that are close to reality, some could be, and there are things that just don't matter, like the ageing of stars, since a few hundred years don't mean much to them. But to terraform a star, well that's something I'd have to be really really REALLY high to be able to imagine...

+1 I support this idea it sounds awesome, itd be good to see stars mean somthing rather than just sitting there looking pretty.

+1 even if the idea of "terra"forming a star, maybe should be an Endless idea, you know, those extinct guys maybe had such technology. Well, I admit that the idea to blow a star or "heal" it, or "interact" with them in some way, sounds epic. Anyway, "just" make stars (and so, nebulae too) trully part of the living universe by giving them stats and effects to star systems and who lives or just passes through them, that would be nice.

As well it doesn't blow up the background, lore ..universe of the game (and don't forget, it's just a game), fine.

I love the idea of stars being more than just a useless image and I completely love the concept of crushing a star into a black hole to optimize a system!

Perhaps an improvement like a Dyson Sphere for a boost to Industrial?

You do realize one of the tech in the mid to late game people to fly around the event horizon of a black hole, yes? We've long since left reality behind.

Ummm. How ya gonna heat up a star? That is a function of it's mass and how hot it has to burn to generate enough radiation pressure to couterbalance it's "weight" trying to collapse it to a point.

There's a movie here...

2. You can magically turn an asteroid belt into a barren planet by building a project in the game, doing the same with stars requires no real life accuracy.

Actually you can't. The tech says you can, but you can't actually use it to do that.

Agreed. The Devs have gone to all the effort of naming and differentiating the different types of stars, so they should do something slightly different from one another. And late-game star teraforming would be amazing.

Great idea! Plus possibility to blow up star, making supernova that will destroy all planets and kill everyone in system. Due to that you will have additional tactic in late game.

It reminds mi tactic of russian scorched earth in war with napoleon, where they burned all cities that french army would not capture any resources nor shelter against the winter.

That will made game a very interesting in late game smiley: biggrin, destroy my system, or try to defend it. But if I win due to destroying, on what I will rebuild my empire?

Cool stuff ;D

I love the idea of the type of star influencing the system statistics. I also like the point about bringing in nebulae to the universe. I remember in GalCiv2 the nebulae slowed ships and reduced visibility... maybe something else, I forget.

Agreed - Stars need to affect the planets in the system in some way. I'd especially like it if the star type (and age) would directly affect the quality and number of planets in each system so that players can look at their surroundings and get a basic overview of their nearby systems without having to explore every last star.

I did that in SE3, ahead of my ships that could collapse dead stars and form planets out of asteroids. It was an unstoppable force of destruction.

This thread is the origin of discussions about stars giving bonuses to system/planet production/happiness.

Other threads about this have been archived:

Feel free to post here about this topic here and inform yourself about the variations the threads listed above have already discussed, but don't open new suggestion threads for anything alike. smiley: wink

I dont support the terraforming of a star, but stars could have bonuses by having more of a certain kind of planets. Much like in Master of Orion 2. That would be a nice bonus, and you would then know what stars to look for. I always liked to find brown stars in master of orion, it was like opening a present! Additionally, the system-wide upgrades could be more concentrated if the planets were more uniform.

Just a thought

I was just thinking the same thing last night! (My first ES game ever). I personally think this could add both a huge bane and a boon, which further adds to the replay-ability.

Star type should affect FIDS, age should affect resources/anomalies. An example of the latter would be more of a higher percent chance of there being a resource/anomaly, like seismic activity and Garden of Eden would be more common in younger stars, whereas artifacts would be more common in older stars.
