Since the past few weeks I can't get the game to launch. I got it on the epic store and have put in a couple hundred hours already before it refused to launch at all. Reinstalled the game. Reinstalled the epic game store. I even updated my graphics card and have up to date drivers.

OS: Windows 10.

Game Store: Epic

Version: Mercury_1.25.4236+2c3a8d99a8_FullPackage_Epic-Windows-Mono-Release-patched

Here's the diagnostics log (screenshotted/ can't upload the html file here).

Bump. Can I do something to expedite this? I browsed through the FAQs and couldn't find a quick solution.

Okay, I've talked to the producers, and they tell me the problem seems to be that the game does not have full permissions to access the folder where the registry.xml is stored. There might be a restriction setting on the folder, or you may need to try to run the game as admin.

Thank you for your reply. I reinstalled Epic Games store, and humankind so that everything is in the C:\ drive to avoid these issues just now. Again, same results. I then verified the access settings and they all look perfectly fine to me as well. I'm attaching screenshots (and re-uploading logs) in case I missed anything.

As you can see, the permissions for all four users is for full access.

I tried running humankind (from the folder here) as an administrator. No luck, either.

Here are the updated diagnostics, but they have the same error:

`11:37:39:302 None Access to the path 'Registry.xml' is denied. `

Jus ashot into the dark. Do you by chance make use of (additional) antivirus software blocking the folder in question?

Just the default windows defender. Also want to reiterate that I have played this game for hundreds of hours on this very PC before it stopped working.

Hey, sorry to hear that it did not solve your problem.

Could you try to delete you "hk" folder? you can rename it with an "_old" to keep your saves and such.

I will take a look at the regsitry access code on our side but I pretty sure we didn't change it for the last few months...

Cheers,

flo

oh sorry quick note: you should not mess or look at the "epic games/Humankind" folder but your "My documents/Humandkind" where your saves, diagnostics files and profile information are kept.

Could you check the permission on this folder too?

Um.. there's no HK folder inside `~/My Documents/Humankind`. I had

- mod.io (empty)

- Temporary files (with diagnostics)

- Users with some '0x0000000000000000` like subfolders which too are empty inside.

I deleted the entire Humankind folder and tried again. No luck. The diagnostics did change though so I guess there's that. Attached below.

edit: forgot to mention that I checked the permissions and they look good as well.

Also want to add that I tried forcing windows to run the game with intel integrated graphics, as well as my GPU, and letting windows decide in "Settings -> Display -> Graphics Settings". No luck.

Do you also have the Epic Games version, and are getting the "access to registry error" in your diagnostics file (see screenshot in the first post)? If so, it's good to know its not just me ^^

Sorry about the confusion, I believe ThorTillas was referring to the "Humankind" folder itself, not a folder named hk. Renaming or deleting this folder will force the game to start "fresh" with default configurations.

Yeah I suspected. I did delete that one and tried running the game again (as mentioned in your quoted message), no luck.

Hum, the error changed.

You still have some "Access to the path 'Registry.xml' is denied." but it's way down the line.

Are you launching the game from the Epic store? or directly by double clicking the Humankind.exe?

As far as I understand the error, Epic is telling us that we are sending an empty user. And the game is saying that it will use the "dev user" stored in the registry.

So we probably miss your epic credential when launching the game. And by looking at the code which handle this, I see we expect your epic credential to be given as a commandline parameter... so it's probably something Epic add when using the store to launch the game.

(Edit: Hum, I use the word credential as a shortcut but it's more a "unique local public token" given by Epic and used to id your session. We are not using your password or some highly sensitive data here ^^')

Try launching it from the store to see if the login errors disappears... if not... perhaps delete the "epic games/Humankind/humankind.exe" file and try to "verify files" (right clic on Humankind in epic store library, then "Manage" and "Verify Files") and launch it again from Epic Store?

I might have been trying to run it directly from the exe. I followed the steps you suggested (delete executable, then verify game). And I got the old diagnostics back, where only access to registry is missing. Attached both, for reference:

Diagnostics (2023'10'18 @1134'59''502''') - RAN FROM EXE.zip

Diagnostics (2023'10'18 @1136'00''052''') - RAN FROM EPIC.zip

And thanks for the clarification but I'm sure you're not storing plaintext passwords, don't worry :)

Ok so use the store to launch the game. We will add this to our current list of known bugs. For some reason we do not support launching the game directly from the exe when using Epic Store....

Now, back to the registry access problem...

I do run out of idea... I tried on my side with different setup and didn't manage to break it.

One of my fellow programmer sugested to force the "run as admin" on the "Humankind.exe" AND the "epic launcher". It seems like "RocketLeague" has these steps in their "default troubleshooting" with Epic (and steam apparently ^^)

You probably know how to do it, but for the sake of clarity:
- go to "C:\Epic Games\Humankind"

- Right click on "Humankind.exe" and choose "Properties"

- In the tab "Compatibility", check "Run this program as an administrator"

- Click "ok" button to apply the changes

Epic game launcher should be in "C:\Epic Games\Launcher\Engine\Binaries\Win32" or "C:\Epic Games\Launcher\Engine\Binaries\Win64"
For some reason, my computer use the 32 version and not the 64... so to be sure enable the "run as admin" on both ^^'

Are you using onenote to sync your document folder with the cloud? if yes, it could be interesting to put ~/Documents/Humankind folder out of onenote...

If it does not help, we could perhaps send you some "custom DLL" with more logging to try to pin point the problem...

I am very sorry we are not able to solve this quicker...

First off, please don't apologize. You folks have been very active and are trying to make sense of this. As a fellow developer, I appreciate that.

I did try all of that. I set Humankind.exe to run as admin in the Properties -> Compatibility window. Then changed both Epic launchers (WHY WOULD THEY HAVE TWO?!?) in the same way. Aaaaaand I still end up with the same situation.

I don't use OneNote/Onedrive stuff. Had to remove them to be able to mod skyrim in peace.

And I'll be open to running some custom DLLs but if its' too much work, don't worry about it honestly. I should have bought the game on steam anyway.
